If you want to eat well in Japan and don't have much knowledge about where to go, this guide provides a very useful starting point. While my assessments of the food quality didn't agree with some of those in the Guide, the descriptions of the restaurants and the little location maps were spot-on. The start rating system is good as always
yet its not easy to plan a trip with this guide - mainly in the north
There is not so much information about organized one day tours and how to get from one place to the others - in a way that helps organizing and planing a tour

We had 4 guidebooks with us in Turkey - this was by far the most useful. It dovetailed very well with Lonely Planet. Detailed descriptions of museums and antiquities were outstanding, restaurant suggestions and hotel recommendations almost always very good. If you can only take one guidebook, grab this.

We have just about every Thailand guidebook here at our school. When we set off on our last photo trip we took with us only three guides. The book that turned out to be the most useful was the Michelin Green Guide for Thailand. The two large maps at the front were very useful in planning the trip. One map highlighted the best places to visit in Thailand (using a 3 star system). The other map gave suggested round trip tours in different areas of Thailand. Another useful feature of the book is that places are sorted alphabetically rather than by region. This meant fast and easy access to places we wanted to visit. If you want to find Pu Chi Fa...use this atlas. Excellent detail, easy to read, more detail than other maps. If you are driving in Thailand, use this book.

Having needed to help my guide/driver navigate the backroads of Syria a month ago, I can say with total confidence that Neos Guide is an "Absolute Must Have" book along with the Lonely Planet "Syria". The city maps especially are extemely clear and necessary, the cities and historic sites are well described, and the recomended selection of sites to see, is superior to suggestions offered by local guides. Trust your book, your guide's actual travel experiences may be limited.
