. Ukraine, 2nd: The Bradt Travel Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Belarus and Ukraine
by: Andrew Evans
March 01, 2007
I actually live and work here in Kiev and I purchased The Bradt Travel Guide to help me plan some upcoming day trips as well as to get some updates on places of interest here in Kiev. And while the guide was obviously well researched for the first edition it seems to me that the 2nd edition was a rush job or maybe just lacking in its design.
For example Bradt says that it's possible to travel on $75 a day - okay granted one should assume that amount is closer to $100 a day with inflation in the Euro and the cheapening of the dollar. The problem at least in Kiev - a very cosmopolitan city, is that many of the restaurants mentioned will cost you between $70 and $100 for a nice meal. By the way Georgian wine is very good and is ... . Russia & Belarus (Lonely Planet Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Belarus and Ukraine

What to say about Belarus? Well, we spent the day the White Russkis commemmorate the end of WWII there, so I've seen it in all of its "grandeur". Not much to recommend it, go and see Belarus if you missed out on the post WWII East European dictatorships, because Belarus is the last of its kind. A genuine personality cult around the president runs politics, and you can get a feel for what it was like in 1970's E. Europe. Guess what- you will not like it. Take some pics of Minsk & move on to Moscow. And if you can find a decent hotel in Minsk, you've done better than my wife and I did.

. Kiev: The Bradt City Guide (Bradt Mini Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Belarus and Ukraine
by: Andrew Evans
November 01, 2004
Anyone planning to travel in Ukraine--or having just returned from a visit to Ukraine--should know that this is the best guidebook I have yet to see. For what I call "after-study" (reading the guidebook when you return from a foreign land, rather than before you go--yes, it's extremely useful), Andrew Evans can't be topped. His chatty yet comprehensive account of Ukraine--its major cities as well as nooks and crannies--is enormously instructive. Not only historical sights and sites, but also hotels large and small, ditto places to eat and drink, are described with indispensable detail. The author KNOWS Ukraine and shares myriad helpful insights with his lucky readers.

. Belarus (Bradt Travel Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Belarus and Ukraine
by: Nigel Roberts

Bradt publishes excellent guides to places off-the-beaten track. In Europe, there is likely no destination as unlikely as Belarus. And there is no other comprehensive guide to the country (Lonely Planet and Rough Guides give it little or no attention). For the curious, Belarus offers much, although getting in is expensive and extremely bureaucratic, due to the off-putting visa regime and requirements for advance hotel reservations and health insurance. Once inside though, the people are warm, the costs are low, and the country is a post-Soviet Soviet style wonderland. This Bradt guide covers trip planning in great detail, and provides info about Minsk and the country's largest cities that you simply won't find anywhere else in English.
My only gripe is that the print is much ... Read More:

. Chernobyl: Confessions of a Reporter
City Travel Guides > Books > Belarus and Ukraine
from: Umbrage Editions
April 01, 2006
Written by prizewinning journalist Igor Kostin, who braved severe radiation to take the only existing photograph of the Chernobyl plant on the day of its catastrophic destruction, Chernobyl: Confessions of a Reporter is a compilation of black-and-white and color photographs that Kostin continued to take for twenty years of the plant, the forbidden zone surrounding it, and the people who worked there. For the first time, Kostin presents Chernobyl's story in words as well as pictures, yet it is the photographs that utterly dominate Chernobyl: Confessions of a Reporter, captured images ranging from men transporting radioactive blocks with their naked hands to the evacuation of villages and the construction of the sacrophagus. A singularly compelling visual glimpse into the heart and aftermath ... Read More:
