We have this series on CD now and the whole family enjoys listening to it on a car journey. It is a good run through history, with things even the adults did not know before.

I am a home school mom of elementary aged children and this book is great. I do suggest you get the book that goes with it or you will be a little lost. This set together has been a wonderful asset to our school experience. It is an easy approach to teaching more than one age. Everyone is enjoying it - even me! There are maps that go along with each lesson which really give the kids a picture of where things took place, fun coloring pages and some word puzzles. The projects that go with each lesson have also been helpful. I find that there is enough info to choose from that I can easily pick what will work for us that lesson and leave out what won't and things still come together well. This is a great preparatory book for parents of a first-grader...simple, direct and informational. Another 'must' read for parents with children about to start school and also children in grades K-8 is Bully-Proofing Children: A Practical, Hands-On Guide to Stop Bullying. It covers all those important social skills that all children need to learn and be empowered with to get along with others. Buy both of these books and your child can't help but be successful and love school.

A must have supplement to go along with this text is the the book Damgerous book for boys. It is full of great ideas for extra curricular activies. I have an only child who is home schooled but does a lot of interacting with his friends. He needs more free,yet structured play. Dangerous book for boys offers this. I like how "What every Third Grader needs to know is formatted. It reminded me of the dnagerous book for boys.
So if you are a home schooler of a boy, or a girl look into both books.

This book is wonderful. It eased my fears about short changing my homeschooler or overlooking some educational aspect. while offering so much information. I like that it offers guidelines on where your child should be but remember that these are guidelines and you may want to check with your state's requirements.

Also, I agree with the reviewer who said that some of the resources/info may be a bit dated-hence the four stars. (Looking forward to a revised edition.) Don't forget to look for online resources as well. For example: [...] is helpful for kids learning to read.

Another thing that I appreciated was its reference-type, secular feel. I highly recommend this book whether just starting out or well into homeschooling.
