In preparation for a trip to South America, I purchased a number of books on the different countries as well as South America in general. By far, the Footprints offered the best information, maps, and tips for successful navigation through the country. Unfortunately, this is such a thick guide that it will not make the trip with us, but it has helped lay the foundation for efficiently exploring all that South America has to offer.

Having just gone to Nicaragua, and relying solely on this book, I would recommend any other book, but don't confuse the trip with this one. The maps in this book are useless. Luckily we were able to pick up a Lonely Planet book, or we would have never found anything in Managua. Their Hotel rating system is nonsense, and I wonder if they just drove by and guessed at the quality of the accomodations. We looked at every room before we booked. We were shocked at the lack of information contained in the book. Actually, I got the impression they might have just called the hotel and asked them to describe it themselves. My wife and I checked almost every India travel guide book that is sold in the USA. We took three travel guides with us to India but the footpring was the only one to return.

Its descriptions aids the reader in visting a site. It guides you as a (semi) independent travel in exploring the sites and how to navigate through them. Other travel guides have similar descriptions of the sites, but they do not tell the travelar where to go. This works fine if you have a guide (but then why bother with a travel guide book), but is not helpful as an independent travelar.

It also had great pre-prep suggestions on who to contact for booking your independent trip.

I haven't gone on the trip yet so I can't comment on the accuracy of the book. I can say that it has help immensely with the planning process as it provides websites for most of the reviewed hostels and transportation services. It is very informative and was recently updated so I am assuming that the information is good. I can only give it four stars due to the fact that I haven't gone on the trip yet. Also, the book is smaller in size compared to the LP guidebook so you could easily take it with you on your trip without it being a burden.

Wow! Fabulous book, fabulous info, fabulous photos, just simply fabulous!
If you are a scuba diver, you need this book. It will inspire you to visit places you have seen only in travel magazines. This book is big and beefy, too. Not a typical travel book, this book gives pages and pages of good info and lush photos of ALL of the best diving destinations known.

Footprint has been writing its South America guidebook series for 80+ years. It is simply the most well-informed guidebook for this continent. Compared to Lonely Planet, there is more information packed into Footprint and the quality of the materials and printing are superior.

The maps are a level above the competition, especially the sad, gray smudges that pass for maps in the Lonely Planet. The multi-page country maps at the back of this series are by far the best maps in any guidebook printed today.

5 stars. The best.

Great guide, particularly for hikers, trekkers, outdoorsmen. Not ideal for folks wanted 4 stars resorts only.

Prior to my honeymoon, in which I surprised my wife, I bought and studied 5 different Chile travel books to prepare for the trip. This was the best one I found and the one that I actually took with me on the trip. It had the best local information which I appreciated because I wasn't interested in staying at a Hilton in Chile.

The author is from Valparaiso and there were places in the book that we visited and loved that weren't even mentioned in the other books. Best of all the author loves Chile and it's culture and you can tell by his writing and advice. If only get one book on Chile, get this one.
