. The Gypsy Morph (The Genesis of Shannara, Book 3)

by: Terry Brooks
August 26, 2008
I've been a Brooks fan since I was like 6 years old. I've read every book he has except World (which isn't really a "book"). I got this one with eager anticipation.
For those that don't know, this is the third book of the "Genesis" series from Brooks. I reviewed Armageddon's Children, and warned people to read Word and Void series first. Well, now I'm saying that even if you read Armageddon's Children, this book will lose you.
What?
Let me start off by saying...this book confused me to no end. Brooks is all over the place with the writing, and as S. Banks mentioned, there are way too many "in my head" details put in the book. Obviously Brooks wants us to feel and think what the characters are feeling ... Read More:

. The Giver
City Travel Guides > Books > Authors- A-Z
by: Lois Lowry
September 10, 2002
This book sets the stage for a utopian society, and it's very believable. Who's to say that this couldn't really happen sometime in the future? However, what I really liked about this book, is that once Jonas found himself, he wasn't afraid to take action and stand up for what he knew was right. Loved it. The first time I read it was the sixth grade, and I still enjoy it. It's one of my favorite books of all time, it's a relatively quick read for an adult, but it really makes you think.

. The Stranger
City Travel Guides > Books > Authors- A-Z
by: Albert Camus
March 13, 1989
(This is a review of the Matthew Ward translation; black an dwhite cover)
This is a newish translation, done by an American rather than the British translation that had previously been the only English version of this French classic. It seems Camus was heavily influenced by American literature of the period -- Hemmingway, Faulkner and others -- and had written The Stranger, the first half especially, to reflect those stylistic sensibilities. The translator argues in his forward that much of that was lost in the British translation. And so here, it is restored.
The result is a matter-of-fact tone more in keeping with our unlikable protagonist, the distant, somewhat bitter Meursault. His almost emotionless life and anti-social tone are stark and ... Read More:

. Ender's Game
City Travel Guides > Books > Authors- A-Z
by: Orson Scott Card
February 18, 2002
I am writing this review to share my thoughts about this book, Ender's Game. First off my feelings about this book are mutual. I both liked and disliked this book.
First, what I disliked. I did not like how they treated Ender at the Battle School he was asked to go to. He was only six years old at the time he entered and the things he went through would have been tough for any preteen these days. Clearly what the Battle School was doing was trying to make him a better soldier but instead they just about ruined him for life. He would never be the same.
Second, what I somewhat liked. I did like how the book always kept me guessing and left me with questions that were eventually answered. I liked how Ender finally made some friends and became a great ... Read More:

. A Separate Peace
City Travel Guides > Books > Authors- A-Z
by: John Knowles
October 07, 2003
You can see this title on the required summer reading tables in bookstores, and I guess schools have been assigning it for almost fifty years. It is easy to see why. Its characters are all adolescents, engaged in the usual struggle for self-definition, subject to sudden mood-swings between intense affection and crippling self-doubt. And being set in 1942-43, the years following America's entry into the War, it offers a new and valuable perspective on this important period in the nation's history. It is, in short, a teachable text.
But it is a text that requires teaching. For one thing, I am not sure how easily most young people can relate to the hermetic world of a single-sex boarding school, let alone an elite New England prep school (the Dover School of the book is ... Read More:

. The Outsiders
City Travel Guides > Books > Authors- A-Z
by: S. E. Hinton
November 01, 1997
Author S.E. Hinton writes with a keen sense of teenage fears, emotions, and alienation from the world of adults. The story concerns the divide between the richer Socs and the lower-income Greasers in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The main character is Ponyboy Curtis, an orphan who is likeable, tough, fearful, and into his Greaser gang. Ponyboy and his peers must deal with a confusing mix of school, friends, the socs, the law, and problems at home. Ponyboy gets jumped by a group of Socs (increasing his coolness), and later finds himself mixed in when his friend Johnny kills a Soc in a confrontation. The two flee, but more trouble follows. This story has nearly all the elements; teenage alienation, machismo, broken homes, alcohol, violence and tragedy.
A couple friends and I read this book ... Read More:
