Sure, maybe Penguin waters things down a bit to much but when it comes to reading complicated primary texts or reviewing scholarly essays, sometimes you need something reliable, short, and to the point and this is it. Also, accompanying every section if a primary quote which I think is a nice touch, there are also good maps and some photographs. I am a fan.

We just came back from Paris and it was a wonderful trip thanks to the City Walks Cards! My husband and I would choose about two cards in the morning and have a perfect day of walking around different areas of Paris. Then we would come back to our hotel, rest a bit, and for the afternoon go for another walk. These cards and a book with pictures are really all you need to have a great time.

I wish we had NY City Walks cards when we stopped in NY and stayed there for a few days, because we ended up walking a whole lot and not really feeling like we explored the city as well as we did Paris.

Next time we take a trip I will make sure to buy the "City Walks" cards for that city (and hope that they have them).

I suggest using these flahscards with a Rand McNally wall map of the U.S. while at home. You can also take these flashcards on roadtrips and match up cards to out-of-state license plates as you see them.

As an atlas, maps feature prominently in this slim overview, and they are very good -- interesting, informative, and well-designed. Ancient Mesopotamia gets the most attention, deservedly so, though ancient civilizations on all continents (except Australia) receive good introductory treatment. This is a slim volume, and lacks depth, but for what it is -- an atlas and an introduction -- it is first-rate. The maps really make the book. My only quibble, a minor one, is that a more extensive bibliography would have been helpful. Highly recommended.

I was looking for a top of the line World Atlas - to replace (update) my 1962 issue of Hammond's atlas. Except for the fact that the new version reflects the names of new nations, boundaries, and satellite photos... they don't have anywhere near the detail of maps previously issued. Where once Hammond had a page for every state in the union - the new version lumps several states together on a page. The older version dedicated a page - or two or three- to every nation... and within those pages were lists of every mountain, lake, county, river, etc. in addition to topography, crop, ore, etc. found within the borders.
Very disappointed in the latest version of Hammond's Atlas... I have placed it under my 45 year old volume.

We had purchased this book for our 11-year-old son, and quickly found it insufficient. So it went to our 9-year-old. We tried to use it for fourth grade homework this week, and it has so little information it's not even funny. It wasn't helpful at all.

It's a pretty book though. It would be a nice thing for a preschooler through maybe first grade, for an aspiring scholar who craved the excitement of maps and world words, but didn't really need any hard information out of it.

Was a required text, but many other classmates found different atlases that much easier to use. We didn't follow dissection as listed in the text so it seemed pointless. Might be useful if implemented properly but it's now collecting dust.

I find the details of Benchmark maps to be much more accurate than the DeLorme series. On a recent trip to New Mexico, we ran into several errors with the DeLorme, which caused us to have to re-trace our route a number of miles each time.
