I am planning a trip to New Zealand and have been absorbing as much information as possible before I go. I have seen several guide books and this is the first and only one I have seen that is set up for a budget traveler. Most of the guides list their $ (supposedly budget) meals at less than $30, this book has it's cheapest listed as under $7 and the expensive stuff listed over $25. Not everyone who travels makes $100,000+ a year :)
It also has heaps of extra information about traveling to NZ and travel in general. Information on passports, visas, safety, health, history, etc. All of the authors are people who have traveled to New Zealand, rather than living there, so you get an angle from the traveler's perspective more than from ... I was given this book from a friend as a vague taster of NZ before I headed down there for a year and they seriously recommended reading it. I didnt know much about New Zealand and didnt really feel like I needed to know much about its history or landscape. But as I started reading this book I was suddenly fuelled with intregue and curiosity about the beauty of NZ and how it came to be. I came across this book while looking to buy a Flicka sailboat...the type that Charles Dewell sailed from Ca to the South Pacific and Hawaii. I wanted a small, seaworthy, solo sailing vessel. Well, you can't get much smaller than a 20 footer!!! The book moved along a bit slowly for me, but I truely enjoyed the adventure. I don't think that I will be following in his footsteps across the Pacific any time soon...but I think I may just buy that Flicka because I have the confidence that it can get me through anything and get me anywhere I have the courage to go! For traveling Australia's highways and main city roads this map was quite good as the maps are quite large and easy to read. But there is not much detail for the smaller streets in the main cities and forget about any sort of details for smaller towns

I am a regular visitor to Maui and I got this book cheap at a library book sale because I am always interested in anything to do with Hawaii. It was surprisingly informative and accurate. The author has even covered some 'local' restaurants (unlike other guide books) she's now blurted to the world, but also missed a few, so some of my favorite finds are safe.
I liked the very detailed, personalized info on hotels etc: 'the owner leaves notes in your room saying things like bang the top of the TV twice if the reception is bad'.
This is an author who clearly enjoyed her research. I gave her four out of five only because she spills the beans on my favorite hideaway restuarant. Now I'll never get in!!!

Ive bought this book to prepare my trip to indo. The info is pretty good for surfspots, very sharp and clear, also the Lingo section is really good. The only critics could that there are too much ads and coupons, and design has been not taken care at all.

Australian birder Sean Dooley describes his Big Year, an effort to break the record for the most birds seen in Australia (and environs) in a year.

I loved this birding memoir. Dooley is a lively, humorous, engaging writer, and his Australian slang makes his voice particularly come alive, at least for this American reader. He conveys a passion for his pursuit and a concern for wildlife and the environment without sanctimony.

Clearly, there are scads of awesome birds in Australia, and undoubtedly they have the best common names of any birds anywhere. The species list at the back of the book is an entertainment in itself.
