I bought this book hoping it would be helpful for the Solomon Islands. There was only about 30 pages about the Solomons. This book is a great guide for Papua New Guinea. I would suggest looking for older guides. I bought an older guide from lonely planet that was strictly about the Solomon Islands. It was much better, only the finacial info was definitely out of date.

Jan Prince really knows French Polynesia. She has lived and traveled there and it shows. Her descriptions of the resorts and restaurants is far beyond that which you find in most travel books; much more detailed and personal. However, I have the previous edition and felt it actually contained much more information (indeed it was a larger book). Still, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this for anyone thinking of traveling to French Polynesia. It's great for both planning your trip and using while there.

Lonely Planet guides have been my guide of choice for some time but this one was not up to snuff. It just wasn't detailed enough. Two areas that bothered me was nothing about the weather and I could not find the specific snorkeling information I wanted and that was one of the prime reasons for going to Tahiti and purchasing the book.
A general warning - the dollar will now only get you 75 polynesian francs instead of the 100 when the book was written. Not Lonely Planet's fault - the dollar has just sunk but what used to be expensive can now be almost ridiculous in price!

I'm in Sydney now on my one week trip. I had contemplated on purchasing a Lonely Planet version of Australia, but it was a bit old (published in 2005-06). I've used Lonely Planet books in the past for Japan and they worked rather well, but I decided to go for Fodor's because it was a brand new book, therefore up-to-date information...

Well, after reading the parts about Sydney over and over, I have come to some conclusions:

*This book is not for backpackers. There is no section on hostels and all of Fodor's choices (highest recommendation) are extremely pricey. This includes restaurant recommendations as well.

I've been to French Polynesia using this LP. The guidebook was helpful (all places I've stayed in were found in LP). Contact information was correct and full. But somehow almost every emotion/opinion described in my LP never matched my own :) However, one would not invent a wheel by saying that French Polynesia is not a place where standard expectations for price/performance can be met.

We found this book to be very helpful and especially appreciated the Conversation/ Essentials in the rear of the book.
We only visited 'Upolu, and the guide gave us important insights about the Samoan culture and etiquette which served us well.
We stayed at Sinalei Reef Resort which we would highly recommend if you are traveling without children, and the restaurant at Coconut's Beach Club was excellent.
This guide is a must if you're going to Samoa and really want to enjoy it to it's fullest.

In general, Western Australia still seems to be off the usual tourist path for most outside visitors to Australia, so there wasn't much selection when it came to finding an appropriate guidebook. For the most part, guides seemed to be too broad (covering all of Australia), or too specific (focusing just on Perth). Despite being an absolutely enormous place on its own, few choices seemed to address the state of WA.

We picked this book up out of desperation, but for the most part, it did a decent enough job. In typical Lonely Planet style, there were lots of budget options for food/accommodation and plenty of details on tours and logistics. Most of the information appeared to be accurate, and a few tips proved quite helpful.
