I'm just back from 10 days in Le Marche. It's such a beautiful region, though largely ignored by tourists and guidebooks. I was lucky to have friends who recently purchased a home in the region and have been traveling there for years. This was the first time they had seen a guidebook for Le Marche, and they were impressed by the specific information on all the little towns that dot the mountain tops there. In fact, they liked it so much that I left it at the house for them and their future visitors to enjoy. I might even buy another one to have to plan my next trip there!

On his website, travel guru Rick Steves says that Blue Guides take "a dry and scholarly approach to the countries of Europe. They're ideal if you want to learn as much about history, art, architecture, and culture as you possibly can." This is basically true, though I much prefer a "dry and scholarly" tone to Rick's "nerdy and precious" style. He's great when it comes to practical tips, but he can't touch the historical, artistic and architectural content of the Blue Guides.

Blue Guides pack a tremendous amount of information into their pages, much more than any other guide I've used. They're wonderful for reading before and after your trip, but they're probably too dense to pack and take along for most people. Before leaving on ... Read More:

Felt compelled to write this after seeing the comments of the previous reviewer.
This is an EXCELLENT guide, instead of wasting money on being carted around en masse on naff tours, save yourself loads of money and just buy this. Its true the bits on Cairo are great but so was all the stuff on Luxor and other areas. We did an off the beaten track cruise (Aswan to Abu Simbel) and had guides with the package and there was not much on the minor ruins and temples here but then its a huge fat book as it is. The descriptions of Karnak are great! Enjoy Egypt - its an fab country with wonderful people and an AMAZING history.

"Blue Guide Greece" is wide-ranging, but its site descriptions and directions are often very skimpy; it should be supplemented with the excellent "Greece: an Oxford Archaeological Guide", which doesn't attempt to cover as much ground but does go into much more detail on the places it does mention.

My husband and I are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel once or twice a year. I always plan for our trips by buying and studying 2 guidebooks, one with lots of pictures, and the other, invariably, the Blue Guide to the site in question. Blue Guide England was the first of these, purchased more than 10 years ago. We used that edition as guide book, historical and geographical reference, and atlas. It became so dogeared and highlighted that we were happy when the next edition was published, purchasing it immediately even though we had no immediate plans to return to England. You won't find the latest Casa Blanca club or Ouerzazate-Marrakech bus schedules in it, but you can't beat the Blue Guide for concise historical background and comment on art and architechture. In places where this really matters, like Volubilis, Moulay Idriss, and Fes, it surpasses more mainstream guide books.
