.Blue Guide Mexico (Blue Guides) City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: John Collis, David M. Jones 1996-11 Blue Guide Mexico does a wonderful job of filling a gap in the Mexican travel guide market. Far and away this is the best guide book in English for discovering the art, architecture, and history of Mexico. It is obvious after reading this guide book how culturally deficient and shallow the Lonely Planet and Rough Guides are (not just for Mexico but in general). I do have one complaint. This book is huge. There are over 100 pages written on Mexico City alone. When is a traveller to have time to read and digest this information? Not on the road, that is for sure! .Blue Guide Southwest France, Second Edition City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: Delia Gray-Durant 2003-06 You can't beat a Blue Guide when it comes to accurate, useful, and detailed information, and Southwest France is no exception. 576 densely printed pages, this book thoroughly covers the Midi-Pyrenees and Aquitaine, including Dordogne, Lot, Landes, Tarn, Gers, Gironde, and the Pyrenees. Elegant towns, superb museums (many little known), chateaux, churches, valleys, vineyards, city maps - this is a total cultural and historical guide to the region, which encompasses a vast amount of territory. And it fits in your pocket, always a plus. If you just want an overview of the most popular sites, this would not be your best choice. It's such a beautiful region, though largely ignored by tourists and guidebooks. I was lucky to have friends who recently purchased a home in the region and have been traveling there for years. This was the first time they had seen a guidebook for Le Marche, and they were impressed by the specific information on all the little towns that dot the mountain tops there. In fact, they liked it so much that I left it at the house for them and their future visitors to enjoy. .Blue Guide the Loire Valley (Blue Guides) City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: John McNeill 1995-10 I am a big fan of the Blue Guide series, I wouldn't want to go to Europe without one. However, this is one I left at home. The author takes you on a road trip around the Loire Valley and comments on every village he passes through even though most have absolutely nothing in them. The major chateaux are given quite a bit of space, especially their architecture but not much on the historical context. The entire book was very dry. However, this is one I left at home. The author takes you on a road trip around the Loire Valley and comments on every village he passes through even though most have absolutely nothing in them. .Blue Guide Prague, Second Edition City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: Jasper Tilbury 2004-07 This is a great guide if you're dying to find every last cornice, pediment and pillaster in Prague. If you're a Phillistine like me and find yourself confusing Art Noveau with Rococo--hell, if you even have to ask what "Art Noveau" is, then forget about it. It's chock-a-block with forgettable details about who refurbished which castle in every century since its "execution," a word the author will accept no synonyms for. There's also a snide, underlying anti-Americanism which Americans like me might find superfluous, if not downright bothersome. Why describe Prague's touristiness as the result of "Americanisation," as if the US held a stranglehold on neon, chintzy souvenirs and aggressive marketing? .Blue Guide Istanbul (4th ed) City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: John Freely 1997-09 This guidebook is great at what it does, but is otherwise limited. It's a really excellent reference to the history, churches, and monuments of Istanbul, often going into exhaustive detail such as what day (On April 23, 1542 at 12 noon, etc.) something happened. (It must be said, however, that Freely gets a bit enthusiastic about some very minor monuments and mosques which do not seem to really deserve it.) It has great information on all the major and minor mosques and other monuments around Istanbul, including maps and diagrams. In this sense, I found it very useful on my trip. It gives very thorough information and descriptions. Great book to use with other guides.
