I spent nearly six weeks studying at the University of North London a few summers ago. Before heading across the pond, I picked this one up when a friend recommended it to me. Of all the literature I used and/or purchased for the trip, this was by far the best. It pointed out tourist hotspots, good restaurants, neat quiet spots, and even had a lot of background about the sites of reference. If you're spending a good few weeks in London and it's your first time (or second or third), you should check this one out! You'll really enjoy it.

You won't find the latest Casa Blanca club or Ouerzazate-Marrakech bus schedules in it, but you can't beat the Blue Guide for concise historical background and comment on art and architechture. In places where this really matters, like Volubilis, Moulay Idriss, and Fes, it surpasses more mainstream guide books. Pen-and-ink sketches replace glossy photos, giving the book the feel of a war correspondent's diary (or the Wall Street Journal?). ...

This travel guide is relatively useless for anyone that wants to know any specifics about traveling in this area of france. If you like history of the region, buy it. If you want useful practical information - don't.

The American traveller to southern Italy should be warned that this region is much different from the more heavily visited and promoted areas of Tuscany, Cinque Terre, and the Amalfi Coast. While those northerly provinces are focussed on tourism and cater to visitors, the south in general can seem almost indifferent. That is not to suggest that it be avoided. The Mezzogiorno is a charming, down-to-earth region that has much to recommend it, particularly to the visitor interested in obtaining a more realistic, everyday sort of insight into Italian life and culture.

As is typical of "Blue Guide" travel publications, this is a very thorough book with good coverage of what to see, and a fair amount of in-depth background on the significance of what you are seeing. I bought it for that background, despite the ten-year old publication date. I think it is worthwhile for anyone contemplating a trip to Tunisia, but be aware that there are some things in the book which simply aren't accurate anymore. So supplement it with at least one other guide published in the last year or so. A trip to Tunisia is such a large expense that scrimping on travel guides that can enhance your visit for 1% or less of the cost of your trip is a penny-wise and pound-foolish approach!

As an alternative to buying a souvenir guide to every site experienced, and missing a great deal more along the way, the Guide contains the specific and important details of major churches, museums, galleries and palazzos. I have used the Guide in Rome and found no need for additional guides. Focus is on what you'll see on your walks, and what you should see. No color pictures, fewer "ads" for stores and restaurants -- tho there are some -- but valuable-to-essential to the tourist serious about the experience in Venice.

I was disappointed with this book. I found it to be mostly out of date and very dry and difficult to get through. It also is missing a key part of any guide book: a map. I thought the illustrations were very poorly done... just childish line drawings where photographs would've been much better. I'd say skip this one and get the lonely planet one instead.
