. Blue Guide Burgundy (Blue Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Ian Ousby
1992-08
My family followed this book to our dream vacation in the French countryside, driving through Burgundy's luscious scenery to ancient villages, towns and castles, and country churches and chateaux. For the cultural traveler, this book (as are all of the Blue Guides) is close to exhaustive. It extensively covers the architecture, art objects and history of apparently every site in Burgundy, with town maps and floor plans of important churches. It is arranged in tours, which take you up streets and into delightful nooks and crannies and courtyards you'd never find on your own in less than a hundred years of looking. In the countryside, it'll take you along luscious quiet roads, through fields and pastures, and along canals and rivers into ... Read More:

. Blue Guide: Egypt
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Williams Veronica Seton, M. V. Seton-Williams, Peter Stocks
1988-06
Felt compelled to write this after seeing the comments of the previous reviewer.
This is an EXCELLENT guide, instead of wasting money on being carted around en masse on naff tours, save yourself loads of money and just buy this. Its true the bits on Cairo are great but so was all the stuff on Luxor and other areas. We did an off the beaten track cruise (Aswan to Abu Simbel) and had guides with the package and there was not much on the minor ruins and temples here but then its a huge fat book as it is. The descriptions of Karnak are great! Enjoy Egypt - its an fab country with wonderful people and an AMAZING history.

. Blue Guide Scotland, Twelfth Edition (Blue Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Elspeth Wills
2001-09
As other reviewers have noted, do not buy the Blue Guides for information on meals, accommodation, transport, etc. They have always been designed to help the traveller understand the history and culture of a country, and the sights that might interest an informed and reflective traveller. Other guides deal with the logistics.
I first travelled in Scotland with the Blue Guide in 1979, and recently bought the current edition for planning a return trip. Although the purpose is clearly the same, I am sorry to note a loss of detail. The ruined cathedral of Elgin, for example, used to have an almost step-by-step description of the visible remains. The current edition skates quickly over the surface of what you can see. Perhaps the ... Read More:

. Blue Guide Umbria, Fourth Edition
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Alta MacAdam
2003-04
If you want a book with photos, choose an EyeWitness guidebook. If you want to reseach places to stay, purchase a Karen Brown guide to inns or hotels. But for in-depth information that focuses on the history, culture and arts in Umbria, Blue Guide Umbria is the best there is.
I lived in Perugia (the largest town in Umbria) for three months during which I traveled extensively throughout the region. The Blue Guide for Umbria was by far the most useful and most accurate of the 4 guide books I brought with me. Frankly,I should have left the rest at home.
While I wouldn't recommend Blue Guide Umbria for researching hotels, you can't go wrong with the ones listed. The restaurant lists are more than adequate and cover all price ranges. ... Read More:
