. Blue Guide: Boston and Cambridge
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: John Freely
1984-05
John Feely has written the thinking person's guide to Boston. This could substitute easily for a history or architecture textbook about the city. It is very accessible because of an excellent index. The text is quite detailed and organized nicely giving first the history, geography and then current status of monuments, buildings, museums, geographic features and neighborhoods. There are some cautions for the buyer. The print is small and the directions for walkers both inside and outside of buildings might be confusing. This is not a guide for hotels, restaurants or entertainment. The book could use some more detailed street maps within each section, similar to the Michelin green guides. Overall a good choice at a good price.

I confidently ordered the guide anticipating the fun of using a blessedly comprehensive work. What a disappointing shock to start trying to use the guide. Not only is it woefully meager but so poorly indexed. I am reminded of the wine commercial about not selling wine before its time. I wish that had been taken to heart with this guide. It is not ready ... Read More:

. Blue Guide Budapest, Second Edition (Blue Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Bob Dent
2001-04
With all due respect to other guide books on Budapest, this one's the best. While newcomers to the capital city of Hungary may be better off with a richly illustrated, colorful, glossy-looking guidebook, Bob Dent's "Budapest" will suite the ones who already know their way in the city and want to learn more about the sights, or maybe even get off the beaten track and see places where mainstream tourists rarely go. The thorough descriptions of just about everything there is to see in Budapest are enriched with bits and pieces of insider information, such as short biographies of famous Hungarians and little tales from Hungary's history. Bob Dent's English is easy to understand, but the book looks more like a textbook than a guidebook and may ... Read More:
