. The Art of Travel
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
from: Penguin Audiobooks
May 02, 2002
In this small book de Botton explores many aspects of travel - why do we do it? what do we get out of it? He explores our expectations, our motives (the search for the exotic, curiosity), and what we are likely to realise from the endeavour.
He explores the way different perspectives from different places and different people (especially artists) can freshen our view of the 'mundane', imbuing it with an exoticness we may have lost the sense to perceive. Lewis Carroll put it this way: `We lose half the pleasure we might have in Life, by not really attending'.
Key people in the book include Huysmans, Hopper, Flaubert, von Humboldt, Wordsworth, van Gogh, Ruskin, Xavier de Maistre and, of course, de Botton!!

. Charles Kuralt's America
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
from: Simon & Schuster Audio
November 01, 1995
I'm easy on this one. I like Charles Kuralt and I like travel books. I wrote my own travel Book "Hobo-ing America". When I compare my book to his it is easy to see the difference in personalities and "class". Charles Kuralt really writes middle class travel books. He is really not "Route 66", blue collar or working class material. But I understand. You really have to write books for those who can afford to buy them - though Jack Kerouac did pretty well. Charles made a commercial success of his love to travel and he always does it with style, good prose and I would even say poetry. I will always read Charles Kuralt. This book is in the latter part of his career when he was older and even wiser - if that is possible.

. Italian Backgrounds (Classic Books on Cassettes Collection) [UNABRIDGED] (Classic Books on Cassettes Collection)
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Edith Wharton; Flo Gibson (Narrator)
January 30, 1996
Italian Backgrounds is comprised of nine, loosely coupled travel essays written by Edith Wharton over a four year period (1901-1904). Few readers are likely to possess her remarkable knowledge of Italian paintings, murals, frescoes, sculpture, and architecture, and in the hands of a lesser writer, these essays might easily have become tedious and overly detailed. Wharton's essays achieve a singular balance between scholarly analysis and captivating memoir.
Italian Backgrounds begins not in Italy, but at a small alpine posting-inn in Switzerland close to the Italian border. She contrasts a picturesque "toy chalet, with its air of self-conscious neatness" with the untidiness of nearby Italian villages. Despite this negative comparison, ... Read More:

. Notes from a Small Island
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
from: Random House Audio
May 04, 1998
If there is anyone out there who has never read Bill Bryson I urge you to start. His books will warm your heart and make you laugh out loud....you can't stay blue or depressed when you're engrossed in one of his works. In spite of his penchant for being an Anglophile (no doubt because he's married to an Englishwoman), you realize, after reading between the lines, he's an all-American kid.
What's so delightful about him is that he not only entertains but educates as well.
Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah! Bill. There is no one like you. I have one complaint and that is there aren't any new 'travelogues' on the horizon. Come on, Bill. You're not that old!.

. Pariswalks Audio Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Sonia Landes, Alison Landes
1998-01
This book has been one of the many reasons I fell in love with Paris.
In fact, it taught me how to explore Paris on my own during the 5 years I lived there. Beginning with this book, I learned how much history and cultural wealth is hidden in every corner of the city, ready to be discovered. I learned to explore the building façades, their inner patios that sometimes hide gardens, statues and even centuries old temples. I have explored parkings for outstanding discoveries (like the medieval wall on the underground parking on rue Mazarine), etc.
I learned enough of the city history to get me curious and start reading on my own about the kings of France, the history of Paris architecture, and so much more.
I have ... Read More:

. Himalaya
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Michael Palin
September 30, 2005
"Himalaya" is a book written by Michael Palin as an alternative account of a trip that was filmed and first shown as a TV program on BBC TV. (This program has also been shown on many other TV stations, and is now available on DVD.) In addition to the text in the book there are many beautiful pictures by Basil Pao, the stills photographer who accompanied the BBC team on the trip.
This was a very interesting trip in beautiful and exciting places. Many countries around the Himalayan Mountains were visited, some of them well off the tourist track and some of them with security problems such that the team needed armed guards. Specifically, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Tibet, China, Nagaland, Assam, Bhutan and Bangladesh were visited. A total of 3000 miles was ... Read More:
