. The Kingdom by the Sea (Penguin Audiobooks)
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Paul Theroux
June 01, 1997
Paul Theroux's travel book soften being out strong opinions in readers- particulrly those who have visited a place he has written about. Many of the most critical seem to focus on a few details and miss the overall tenor of the piece. As Theroux makes quite clear in this book, he loves the English seacoast, and he met many warm people along the way. At the same time, he unflinchingly relates every detail of his experience, every rude comment, every unpleasant encounter. As he notes, most travel writing is boring; we went to Egypt, we saw the pyramids, et cetera. What makes for interesting reading is the minutia, the detail that makes my trip different from your trip. My England is nothing like Theroux's, but then, I wasn't there for ... Read More:

. Made in America
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Bill Bryson
August 21, 1995
In "Made in America", Bill Bryson charts the development of the United States of America, from the arrival of the earliest settlers to the quirks of modern day society. Yet this book is more than a mere history book. It is a celebration and an exposition of American popular culture, guaranteed to change the way you look at the U.S.A.
The scope of this book is very wide, yet the author's skill and wit hold it together quite nicely and the end result is very readable. Bryson covers topics as diverse as politics, the american language, the entertainment industry, the transport industries, moves, food and immigration - yet keeps the reader's attention the whole time with his eloquent prose and amusing anecdotes.

. Trip to the Beach, A
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Robert Blanchard
October 10, 2000
The Blanchards have done what a lot of us dream of doing: a fun job without bosses in a fun country with fantastic weather--at least in season! Aside from providing a thoroughly enjoyable account of their move to Anguilla, the book is also a passionate description of how one can make a dream come true, and with not that much money at all. Having said that, their repeated references to the Anguillan "paradise" maybe a bit excessive when one considers the horrible red-tape, vicious hurricanes and logistic nightmares they had to deal with. But perhaps that is what makes this book really excellent: it is a realistic view of the pros and cons of the Blanchards' choice, devoid of sticky romanticism and with no trace whatsoever of the smugness and superiority ... . Last Breath: Cautionary Tales from the Limits of Human Endurance
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
from: Random House Audio
October 02, 2001
I first read this book over five years ago. I could NOT put it down!
These are part fiction part true short stories of the many ways one
can take ones LAST BREATH - literally. For some reason I started in
the middle with the drowning story. A blow by blow clinical description of what goes on in your body as you drown. Facinating! Each story is
pretty much about people taking chances and risking their lives for
different reasons;mountain climbing, cycling, scuba diving,or just being caught out in the cold, - some recover - but some wind up taking their Last Breath. As you read it you know exactly how it happens. I've read it
three times. Great read -especially to the layperson who may not know
strenuous sports ... Read More:
