.Teach Me More Russian (Paperback and Audio Cassette): A Musical Journey Through the Year City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette by: Judy Mahoney 1997-02 I'm teaching my kids Russian and I was hoping that this CD would provide us with educational time while we drive between schools and activities. For the most part it is a good CD. The best part is the kids dialogue where they speak slowly and clearly. The worst part is the lady singing in a very high pitched voice. Her voice is so high pitched that I can barely make out what she is saying. The man singing is good. .River Horse: A Voyage Across America City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette by: William Least Heat Moon November 01, 1999 It is a disappointment that many Americans don't read after graduation...let alone know anything about American geography. A great amount of detail, stories, and fact. I only wish he would have discussed his fellow sailors a bit more. And: more pictures! Though there may be questions circling around Heat-Moon's style, this was a great read. I followed along his voyage with a map of the US (and a detailed map of Oregon once he reached it...I love my state) and highly recommend future readers do the same. It ads to the experience. O'Rourke October 04, 1994 If you aren't familiar with PJ O'Rourke, the caustic, polically-incorrect humorist who used to write for the Rolling Stone when it was worth reading, this book of collected travel writings from the 1980's is a good place to start. Besides being funny, O'Rourke has an irritating way of insulting your favorite politician or political movement by pointing out their idiocy and forcing you to realize you are an idiot too for believing them. And you still enjoy the article. O'Rourke is fairly conservative, in a libertarian sort of way, so if you think Gore is exciting, Hillary (or Bill for that matter) is sexy, and Obama is a black descendant of slaves who fought his way to the top via expensive prep schools, Columbia and Harvard, you ... .A Year in Provence (abridged) City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette from: Macmillan Audio October 15, 1991 Mayle's vision of Provence is mostly fantasy. It's true, the details of food and weather and habits are accurate, but it rings of 19th century English colonial patriarchy. The French "peasants" are portrayed like happy go lucky children living in a Romanticized garden of Eden uncorrupted by the real world of London and Paris. Mayle is the benevolent Patriarch in contrast to the towns cast of cartoonish personalities (it's no accident this book was adapted to a comedic TV series). If it was a novel at least there would be a plot, but instead it's a faux anthropological survey with Mayle studying the life and habits of local natives and imparting information for those back home who wish to follow his colonial ambitions (Mayle was in advertising). .Lonely Planet Moroccan Arabic: A Three-In-One Survival Kit (Travel Talk) City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette by: Audio 1999-06 I got this book hoping I could learn the language before I went on my vacation to Casablanca. What I did find out later (I wouldnt have known unless someone told me) was that some words were not ranslated properly! One of the transliterations of a word gave the Arabic word: "tarjim" which means "translate" in Arabic! Big mistake! Also, some words in the translation for a phrase were missing. I wouldnt recommend it, unless you are desperate. Plus, a lot of the books pages (which aren't many, it's a very thin book)were taken up with how to count to ten in Berber, Berber phrases, and some French phrases. If I wanted a tiny French phrasebook I would have bought one. This book is really small and a lot of it is wasted with the French and Berber stuff, ...
