. Travels in Alaska
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: John Muir
1996-03
The beauty of this wonderful reprinting is how it shows John Muir as a person, how it helps us to understand the dynamic and overwhelming beauty of Alaska, and the changes in the people of Alaska. Muir's complete, tireless, and joyful commitment to nature comes through on every page. The book unintentionally provides an excellent portrait of the kind of inexhaustible devotion it takes to change the world as did Muir. The book also provides a stunning portrait of Alaska in the latter part of the 19th Century and allows one to compare the Alaska of those days with Alaska of earlier times and of today. The biggest changes are in the glaciers and in the people. The glaciers have receded dramatically as a natural part of their centuries' long ... Read More:

. Turkish: Traveltalk (Travel Talk)
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Audio
1999-06
Most foreign language programs provide a slow, syllable by syllable break down of each word before hitting you with the entire sentence at top speed. Not this program!
They read the sentence at full speed, give you the english translation, then read the sentence again - at full speed. There is no way to tell where one word begins and one ends. Nor is there anyway to figure out how the sentence is structured.
I speak three languages, including one non-IndoEuropean, and read a fourth. I couldn't make any sense out of this mess. Don't waste your money on this!

. China Road
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette

Before and after my two trips to China, 1998 and 2000, I had read just about every relatively modern travel essay on China. Mark Salzman's "Iron and Silk" had always been my favorite. Unfortunately, it was written in 1982 and the China it described has changed over in many ways many times.
I still love "Iron and Silk" but have looked and yearned for a more up to date travel essay that is more accurate regarding today's China. Until "China Road" I had never found it.
I know a lot of people liked "Rivertown" but it just did not do it for me. The recent "American Shaolin" is a great read but unfortunately tells a story from the early 1990's. China has changed so much and so fast since the end of Mao and the modernization that started ... Read More:

. The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: J. Maarten Troost
May 15, 2007
I would not advise the reader to travel to Kiribati, but the book is a must read for those who've never really left their comfort zone in the U.S. The author paints a beautiful picture of the riveting blue ocean, the palm trees, the colors of the sunset. But he also paints a vivid portrait of a land that the world has forgotten; the terrible conditions that the natives endure daily, the lack of food and health system. I found myself cringing as I read of the reef-toilet, the soiled diapers floating in the water, and could picture it all.
Yet, Maarten pulls you into this story so well you find yourself admiring the daily trials he had to endure, and laughing at the self-deprecating way he tells the story. It was educational, hilarious and amazing. That ... Read More:

. Footloose in the West of Ireland
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Mike Harding
1997-10
An introductory portrait of this talented author sets the tone of this lovely book on page x of its introduction. His slightly raffish pose overlooking the southernmost point of mainland Ireland prefaces a splendid and colourful vista of the country's best of the west. Of course as everyone knows this is a wild and beautiful area, where farmers still carry their peat in wheelbarrows (Connemara), and stone walls are uniquely crazy (the Burren). Ireland's entire population is still less than Puerto Rico, though it is almost eight times its size. Its fiordlike coastline, and imposing mountains are wonderfully described with a storyteller's flair, a gentle touch, and often a winking eye. He lets you feel the flowers underfoot in County Clare, but doesnt talk about ... Read More:

. Ripe for the Picking
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Annie Hawes
April 24, 2003
Annie Hawes' stories of her life in Italy are by the far the most down-to-earth and real and interesting of any that I've ever read. If you've never encounted Hawes, please have a look at "Extra Virgin" and work your way over here. Hawes doesn't patronize the people that she writes about, she loves and understands them, and, with time, the reader does too. She is by far the best guide to the real Italy and real Italians that I have encountered. And she's darn funny!
