Enlightening. I bought the book after seeing the movie. Both helped me understand parts of the debt crisis that I didn't fully get before. Some of the dangers it warns against seem to be unfolding now.

I've developed a far more skeptical attitude towards the stock market recently, largely because of IOUSA. This skepticism has helped me dodge some of the recent equity losses. I realize this is extremely short-term, but at least I'm aware of the arguments opposing Wall St's continual bull-pumping. The traditional mentality of "don't sell now, it's the best time to buy" is incredibly ingrained in our society. As is usually the treatment of any policy issue during a campaign, the ideas presented in FairTax: The Truth - Answering the Critics are cloaked in more than a bit of hyperbole. Most of the following examples of this exaggeration have been mentioned by others. Still, they are worth repeating:

- The IRS will probably not disappear if FairTax is adopted. Some government body will be needed to collect and audit the FairTax proceeds. That organization will likely be the IRS.

- On page 30, the authors state, "The FairTax would eliminate the embedded costs of the American tax code - taxes on capital and labor - from the retail price, allowing corporations and businesses operating in the United States to sell their good and services ... Read More:

Although I have not yet read the entire book, there's one thing that EVERYONE is missing.
All the gold bugs can rush and buy, but the problem is, if there's an economic meltdown, gold and silver will be illegal!
This allows the government and feds to "buy" low, and sell high.
In the great depression, it was illegal to carry gold and silver.

Although there are not yet ANY laws prohibiting gold or silver, it is still not safe!

The reason?
I have heard that the Patriot Act (or as I call it unpatriotic act), has a section where it makes it LEGAL for federal officials and government to go into your house, take any gold and silver they want, as well as any currency they want, without even doing so much as asking or notifying ... This fascinating book is a guide to the nonverbal communication people use in everyday situations. It comes from the FBIs analysis of nonverbal clues that telegraph untrustworthiness and deception. The author's goal is to help you understand and decipher body language in every day situations so that you can better understand people, whether they know it or not. A section of the book explores the brain and the limbic system, which is the source of involuntary signs that people demonstrate in response to their emotions. All in all a good look at a specific element of reading people.

If you're looking for a complete guide to reading and responding to other people, I absolutely loved a book called The Personality Code

This book is definitely one of the best books ever...I claim to be a mathematician somewhat having gained straight A's in pure and applied mathematics and advanced mathematics with (a boring) engineering degree at a number of UK univerisities, and after years of dabbling in options trading and having experienced first hand; Black Monday (black swan?), the Asian Economic Crisis, living in the epicentre of SARS (lucky to avoid it), and being in this market whilst we have one of the greatest financial crisis ever since the great depression..this book in my opinion is a real diamond and i reckon Taleb is a genius. Dixit and Nalebuff got to the top of the mountain with the first edition of this book in 1991. They have continued to climb the last 17 years.

I found QBQ through Dave Ramsey's radio program. Dave is the Financial Peace guru and author of The Total Money Makeover. I am a big Ramsey fan and I figured if QBQ was mandatory reading for his staff then it should be for me and my team as well. QBQ is a quick read and when actually put into practice can have a dramatic impact on one's personal and professional life. Unfortunately, many people will miss its profound implications because of its simplicity. The fact is, if you're like me, you have very little time to learn new concepts much less put them into practice. If so, you're going to love QBQ. In the classic Godin style, more than anything this book is motivational, with an expected emphasis on embracing change and overcoming the F-word (Fear). But this time there's more to it (hence the multitude of tags) -- leadership! We have to assemble and lead a tribe, and "managing" isn't going to work. We must start movements, via motivation and connectivity. "The barriers to leadership have fallen," as the necessary tools are now readily available: blogs, search, RSS, social networks, GTD, progress trackers, etc.
