This book is very well written. It is concise, very low on fluff, and great for intuitive people. It gives you motivation and the feeling of - "YEAH! I can do it!". But there is a huge piece missing - people. In today's world, businesses do not have 3 employees. They have 3000. The foundation for a successful business is its people, and the book does not say anything about how to make sure that the people in the organization remain productive and happy. Instead, the book promotes the approach that, if you encourage and inspire your employees, then they will make a great team. Some things were explained in the book fairly well, however it is too wordy. Once again these textbooks do a bang-up job of taking your money and confusing the hell out of you. This is why people are afraid to take classes like Corporate Finance or even pursue a degree in related fields.

This book is written many levels above the students head and it is supposed to be BASIC! It's funny many of these authors are just instructors with an extremely high level of education (Phd's) and no REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE! Thankfully I had a great teacher that had oodles of experience, or else I would need some boots to step through this...

I won this book in a lottery and it was on my bookshelf for several years. I thought it would be one of those repetitive bestsellers about management and leadership, so common in this genre. Belonging to this genre, this book could not escape its being repetitive, but the content far outweighed this minor flaw. It was mainly about systemic thinking or systems theory, which is the 5th discipline. I had read about systemic thinking (in a text book by Adalberto Chiavenato), but very superficially. He only made the reference that the organizations are systems similar to living organisms, in the sense that they interact with their environment.

good job explaining concepts.
If I may suggest something that
has helped my studies greatly, a little book called
Don't Like to Read, Then Don't, Listen!: How to
Turn Any Type of Text Into Audio Files That Can
Be Read to You!. I know that many students out
there are like me and would rather listen to
material than have to read it themselves. I use
programs like the one that is reading this review
to have my texts read to me. This is a god send
for me. One can get this title on amazon.

Having heard that this was the seminal work in usabiliy, my expectations were probably too high.

Some of the principles laid out are indeed excellent and well illustrated.

The structure of the book is - ironically - not crystal clear. As I am reading the book I find myself looking back at the table of contents to understand the structure.

The writing style is slightly entertaining at first and you sympathize with the author hanging out himself as a clumsy and spacey academic. However, after the first 30 pages the rambling style and the somewhat unstructured content makes the book really boring. I had to push myself to finish it.

I read. A lot. That said, only half this book is worth the time and energy it took me to read it. The middle half, to be specific. The first few chapters are dedicated to Sachs detailing to us that, no, he's not an idiot writing about something he's had no experience with and that, yes, he can help to solve macroeconomic problems. The end chapters are all Sachs recapping what he said in the rest of the book with charts and graphs that start to become meaningless if you're not a economist or a student with a couple econ classes under your belt. The middle, in my opinion, is the only redeeming part of this book that mentions far too often big-names Sachs has met and important jobs he's held.
