I found this guidebook extremely helpful during our trip to the South of France with our three kids (aged, 2,4 and 13). It was easy to digest, included important and interesting things but didn't overwhelm with too much detail. Some of the prices were slightly low, but the phone numbers, times and locations were accurate. It also helped me pick out things that would appeal to the different aged kids in our family. I particularly liked the sections on Avignon and Nimes/Pont-du-Gard. The resturant sections were helpful as well, although a couple of places were no longer around.

Over the last 15 years, I have undertaken a range of overseas assignments in development and disaster relief, during which I have been exposed to many risks that I have not faced before. One the most important lessons that I have learnt is the vital importance of looking after yourself and your colleagues while away. This is one of the two books which I now take with me on every assignment.

It is reasonable small in size (so easy to pack) but full of sensible, practical advice which has clearly been written by somebody who has travelled herself and knows the problems of living and working abroad in lesser developed countries.

I thoroughly recommend this book to travellers and aid workers alike.

I always find the Cadogan Guides to be very well written and in particular an excellent source of information for food and lodging in any city. I have never been steered wrong by them and their guide to Rome is no exception. I also find their historical information to be entertaining as well as informative.

If you are an experienced traveler and are looking for something that is a step up from the "Let's Go" guides, yet not as stuffy as say, Fodor's, then these are the guides for you.
