While the format of the book is good, the content appears weak. I bought it to learn about areas I didn't know, but to gauge the value of the information, looked at the one I do know (Lake Erie). Ohio, with over 260 miles of shoreline and some wonderful island trips, is omitted. In the directory of paddling clubs, the venerable Keelhaulers and Bradstreet groups are conspicuous by their absence. These are not insignificant oversights.

Disclaimer: I have been a librarian for 35 years, and a motorcycle rider for 46 years, so I can hardly claim to be a typical or neutral reviewer of this book. If Amazon permitted 6 stars, I would award them. It is a rare event indeed to find a work that so lovingly deals with both motorcycle riding and books.

Ted Bishop captures vividly the essence of long distance motorcycle riding, including writing in one's head while riding, and the distraction to a writer to riding in one's head while attempting to write (a considerably less dangerous activity). His words took me back to an 11,000-mile ride that I made two years ago, along many of the same roads.

I took last summer off to float some rivers in Canada. This book is excellent both for deciding which of the rivers of Northern Saskatchewan to float and for use during your trip. It is exceptionally well organized and detailed. Ms. Archer will not steer you wrong and the book is full of helpful advice that comes from a person who has obviously done a multitude of river trips and who has an exceptional level of wilderness wisdom and skill.

"Distant Fires" was published in 1990 and is the true account of a summer canoe trip from Duluth Minnesota to Hudson Bay Canada by two men in their early 20's. More than anything else, this book speaks to the modern charisma and abilities of the author, who planned and accomplished the journey, then, wrote such a wonderful and humorous account of it. Chapter by chapter, the reader is taken to the water, along the route, and into the perspective of the adventure. This book is testomony to what's in the future and beyond the horizon. It cannot be over-recommended for young and old. Thank you Scott Anderson for sharing your uncommon knowledge and insight of "Distant Fires" on earth and in our lives.

Over the years, I have been very pleased with travel guides by DK Publishing, but this one was a big let down. We tried several of the recommended restaurants, and they were absolute disappointments. Whoever recommended these restaurants could not have actually tried them, as they consistently reflected poor quality food, service, and hygiene. Unfortunately, the most recent edition of this guidebook available in 2008 was published in 2005, so it was outdated. Several of the recommended restaurants are now closed. This confirms that they were probably not good restaurants in the first place. I wonder if the publisher is paid to put certain restaurants on the list? I bought this book for a friend who is moving to Canada soon. My main reason for buying it was that the language level looked low enough for a non-native English speaker.

At first glance, the book seems to be a good basic guide. It covers a wide variety of topics which make it a good general book. However; the book is poorly written and has quite a few grammatical and factual errors. It also seems to be written from a Canadian rather than an "outsider" because much of her claims are common Canadian misunderstandings. For example, she claims that Canada has a "strict separation between Church and state." While the US has the separation, Canada does not. I was looking for a good travel book that listed out of the way places as well as big name destinations and this one fit the bill. It includes the usual hotels and restaurants as well as entertainment venues. I was surprised to see a business on a Pacific Ocean fishing pier with rod and tackle rental! Silly as it seems, that's what sold me on this book enough to purchase online. I was not disappointed when it arrived. All along our travel route were listed a plethora of side trips and interesting things to see and do. It reminded me of when I was a child and my father would always have some sort of travel book for our annual vacation excusions. More often than not, he ended up purchasing a Mobil travel book.
