. Vancouver (City Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Canada
by: Karla Zimmerman
April 01, 2005
Perhaps erroneously, I expect Lonely Planet guides to cater to the smart and budget-conscious traveler. Far too many of the hotels and especially the restaurants in this guide were waaay out of my price range. Further, the writer recommends Granville Island as a must-see of artists studios and a farmer's market, when it was actually a Disneyland version of such. Lastly, her chipper enthusiasm for diversity-as-consumer-product chafed. Better to get Douglas Coupland's City of Glass; it's not a guidebook per se, but it's a better guide.

. Exploring the South Coast of British Columbia: Gulf Islands and Desolation Sound to Broughton Archipelago and Blunden Harbour, 2nd Ed.
City Travel Guides > Books > Canada
by: Don Douglass, Reanne Hemingway-Douglass
March 01, 1999
If you are planning a cruise South Coast BC (Gulf Islands, Desolation, Broughtons and Blundon Harbour) this book is a must. For frame of reference: My husband and I cruise on a small sailboat, anchor every evening (meaning we do not pull to dock) and go ashore to reprovision, sightsee, launder and take warm showers. Our trips are usually 2 months or less in length.
OK, so we have used several different books to cruise this area and have found ourselves referring to and trusting this one the most. If I had cruise with one book only, this would be it. The book's chapters are organized by logical, small area cruising grounds. The author gives an overview of the area and then segments out the waterways, coves, anchorages, etc. He ... Read More:

. Handbook of the Canadian Rockies
City Travel Guides > Books > Canada
by: Ben Gadd
May 01, 1996
I cannot rave enough about this book. I wandered into a gift shop in Jasper searching for a geological map, but no one knew what that was (I was offered topographic maps by the staff.) Finally, several gift shops later someone suggested this guide. I initially hesitated, since it was more then I had planned to spend. All I wanted was a brief outline of local geology, and I got so much more!
Absolutely fabulous! Entertaining, comprehensive, beautifully illustrated, authoritative and yet written with a sense of humour. I felt fully prepared to pick mushrooms, face bears, or lecture random hikers on the behaviour of gulls. Worth every penny! I am in awe of Mr. Gadd, and I thank him with all my heart for this gem of a book.

. Day of Fire (2176 Series, Book 2)
City Travel Guides > Books > Canada
by: Kathleen Nance
2004-05
DAY OF FIRE by Kathleen Nance is the second novel in a sci-fi romance series that takes place in the year 2176. Set in post-plague Canada, it's the story of a female Mountie on a mission to find out who murdered her partner and the hunky Chinook medical doctor who accompanies her. His quest is to find out if a new virus is on the loose in Canada.
First, I'd like to say upfront that the author has a vivid imagination and really brings alive a future in which Canada is an isolated country that was decimated by disease. The little details were interesting, from the Mountie code of living to the Chinook Indian rituals, and made the story (with its science-fiction setting) feel real and plausible.
That said, unfortunately, ... Read More:
