Went to Montreal for the first time in August 2008. This guide does a great job of letting you know about activities off the beaten path. For example, every Sunday in the summer there is a drum jam by the University in a park by the hill (it's called the tam tam jam). It's like Woodstock and totally made the trip for me. No other guide book discussed it, but this one did.

All of these streetwise maps are great. They focus on the downtowns of major cities- just where you probably are when you are walking around and need a quick reference. The size is perfect, and the plastic coating makes them extremely durable. I was in Montreal for over a month and had three local people ask me where I got the map - twice when I pulled it out on the Metro to review where I was going once I got off, once just on the street. As one person told me: "It doesn't look like a tourist map, I'd like one. Where did you get it?" The same thing happened twice in Paris last year with that map. Highly recommend!

This book could have been a lot better than it was. I thought it was going to have at least a little bite to it, but instead, every page broadcasted the same (incredibly inoffensive) message: "I love Canada!!! YAY!!!"

I love Canada too, but there are a lot of silly (and stupid) things about the country as well. If this book had shown more of the silly things, this would have been a much better buy.

First of all, the title of the audio book "Canoeing With The Cree" is misleading. This work is not about Cree Indian canoeing style. Nor is it about a trip taken with Cree Indians. It is about two boys, Eric Sevareid (later a famous journalist and TV reporter) and Walter Port aged 17 and 19 respectively, who take the trip of a lifetime canoeing some 2200 miles from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay over the course of one summer. Although they do occasionally paddle with or get assistance from both Indians and whites alike, they are pretty much on their own in the world of 1930- No GPS, no satellite phones and a route with long undeveloped stretches between towns and eventually trading posts. The first few chapters of this book made me laugh out loud,as the Stobs struggle to learn about their new boat and deal with the invariable problems with a new-used boat. Then the book settled down into a straight travelog, interspersed with a little strained humor. Worth reading. Gave me a new interest in cruising the Tennessee-Tom Bigbee.

We started using Frommer's guides over 20 years ago and continue to be extremely pleased with them! We like to research places we go before we leave home and these guides make that job so much easier! They have always proven very valuable and well worth their cost. This Frommer's guide on Montreal and Quebec is as terrific as I expected it to be.

Creepy crawly creatures are the least of Kate Jackson's worries when she travels to the Congo to advance her study of herpetology. The singularly unresponsive African bureaucracy, utterly wilting heat and damp, and the near-impossibility of getting around in a country where paved roads are little more than a memory are every bit as threatening as the most dangerous slithering serpent. This well-told account of Jackson's travels in the Congo is a must-read for anyone who wants to know what it's really like to slog through the jungle.
