As a longtime Alaskan, I feel fortunate to have had both Doug and Jill in many courses. The book Snow sense is now the required reading material for all Nat'l Ski Patrol avalanche courses, and rightly so. I read it at the begining of every season. True avalanche professionals. If you ever have the chance, come to Alaska and take one of their courses.

Beware Rocky Mountaineer Vacations!
We booked a day trip to Whistler with them and when we arrived at the destination found they had failed to organize any of the events promised and we were left having to pay for a Greyhound bus home. It also turns out the package was very over priced. They eventually offered us only a 30% refund. Perhaps if we had used a book like this we would have spotted the alternatives.

My fiance and I are going to Nova Scotia on our honeymoon this summer. This guide was the best one I've found. We're also going to Prince Edward Island and this book covers all of the Atlantic provinces. It even has sample itineraries which have been helpful because we are creating a honeymoon registry. Great buy! I would also recommend requesting free information from the tourist office of NS, they send out an informative brochure/book.

Let me just indicate that I am an avid fan of artist Guy Delisle's graphic novels and short stories. I have since purchased his newest book "Burma Chronicles" after reading his wonderful, insightful and caustic "Pyongyang", which details the bizarre, communist "hermit" nation of North Korea.

"Shenzhen" by no means, was the author's first book of its kind, and the predecessor to "Pyongyang". In thisblack-and-white graphic novel, Delisle chronicles his stay in the province of Shenzhen, a region near other major cities in communist China, and the more liberal nations Hong Kong and Taiwan. A very interesting book. Some of the places are REALLY isolated. I'm always a little bit cautious about being so cut off from civilization, in case of a medical emergency. However, if you are young and healthy, the book is filled with great ideas.

As can be expected from a Lonely Planet publication, Vancouver City Guide authored by John Lee is a resourceful, informative, and highly entertaining book. Written in lively, attractive English, this guide has everything one expects from it: background information on the place, clear division into thematic chapters, cross-references between individual sections, reference guide at the end , and - what is of utmost importance - up-to-date information on what Vancouver has to offer - from arts festivals to skiing clinics. If you are not completely satisfied with the extensive list of affordable and not-so-affordable hotels and restaurants (like I and my wife sometimes were), there are always useful internet links to various web pages provided for your convenience.

We found this book to be a great resource for trying to cover all areas of the park in only 5 days. We were able to do some hiking in all the main areas of the park and really get to take in some of the great beauty of the park that you just can't see from the road!

After watching the PBS series in July, I decided to buy the book. (I already own Great Lodges of the National Parks.) Not only are all of the spots in the series here, but MANY more. They all have wonderful photos and even better stories. It was touching to hear once more about Ken Jones (the first show of the series is in his memory).
