The book has lots of information on the islands themselves and explains all reef and some wreck dives. However 95% of the dive sites are rated as 4 stars and the remaining 5% are rated 3 stars, so you can't tell which ones are the best dives.

This was probably the first piece of scientific "field-study" literature I've ever read, and i would consider it a must-read for anyone in the biological or environmental fields. Carr does an excellent job of portraying a contrast in cultures and simultaneously gives the reader an incredible understanding of the natural climate of the regions he visits as well. His writing style and content both keep the reader engaged, and years after my first read of it, I find myself coming back to the work to read through various sections from time to time. As a young conservation ecologist, this, along with Aldo Leopold's Sand County Almanac, constitutes my professional bible.

Well, I just got this from Amazon (1 month to get it delivered!) and am unimpressed. I've read it, and just don't feel any more ready for my trip than I did before. I also ordered the landmark guide, and if it ever comes, I'll compare it as well.... The pictures ARE lovely and it's a handy size for throwing in a pocket or bag. Will update the review after I return from St Lucia....

I just picked this up and am headed to St Lucia next week (will update after I return). After getting this book, the Insight guide, and the Rough guide (which is anything but rough) I like this best. It's throw-in-your pocket small, chock full of info, and every page I open, I find things I want to do, and enough instruction on how to go about doing it. It has nice maps, and things seem well organized by topic (nice notable for parents- kids section). The top 10 list of things to do peaked my interest: every one of the items sound GREAT. I think this book is more tumed to the active traveller that really wants to get out and see their destination. I knew Claudia slightly when I was resident in Cuba as a journalist from 1993-2000. Her book is well researched and wriiten from the viewpoint of an unbiased and perceptive member of the foreign community of Havana. A must for all Cuba watchers and those considering visiting the most fascinating island in the Americas.

I keep forgetting how much I don't care for Frommer's guides and wind up buying another one.

1. Frommer's has next to no pictures.
2. I think somebody went to a couple of random restaurants and beaches and decided to call them the "Best of".

For example, Frommer's says there is snorkeling at Luqillo beach, but there is none (unless all you want to see is sand). Luquillo is a great beach for swimming, but the snorkeling sucks.

Another example is the restaurant in the southeast part of the island called Tulio's. While it is a nice restaurant and our food was good, it is not cheap. At least I don't consider $20 a plate cheap.

This is an absolutely fascinating book on the Caribbean - the content, the writing and the photography are all superb.
In addition to its stated purpose of being an architectural guide, it surpasses most travel books in the useful information it imparts to anyone visiting this delightful area or wishing to learn more about its rich culture and heritage. Aside from the stunningly beautiful color photography, the maps and drawings are very helpful and tastefully displayed. This certainly is my new, indispensable reference source on the Eastern Caribbean. I'm amazed at how much relevant and useful information the authors managed to present in one book. am kind of disappointed when I paid over 70 dollars to get this book. I should have ordered books written by some European Master chefs from oversea source. Eric Ripert is no doubt one of the best in business. If you have eaten in his restaurant, Le Bernadin, you will completely agree with me. I dined there several times. It is another blockbuster team up (Rhulman and Ripert). Lately, Rhulman's books completely failed my expectation. It become more marketing driven. And this book certainly is one of them. Big book, lots of pictures. But it is just background picture of their vacation or some cherry tomatoes or unneccessary pictures of Ruhlman in cool looking sun glasses or Eric Ripert on the beach. Being a native of Cuba and having visited Cuba in 1999, this book brought back many memories. Some were fun and some just frustrating. The author captures the frustrations and often the comical way that "Cuba" makes it's own people and those who visit the island act. The unjustice of how the Cubans are treated, in their own homeland, the constant police watch you feel wherever you go.

This book points speaks clearly about the spirit of the Cubans. Even though they are frustrated, underpaid, underfed, etc. they still get up every morning and look for whatever good there is to find.
