. Best Dives' Snorkeling Adventures (3rd Edition) (Best Dives Snorkeling Adventures)
City Travel Guides > Books > Caribbean
by: Joyce Huber, Jon Huber, Claudia Sammartino
2004-04
I've recently embraced snorkeling, and one of my biggest frustrations is the number of books that combine snorkeling and diving... and then focus almost wholly on the diving. Since many of us cannot get PADI certified (for example, if we've ever had asthma), we're left with only snippets and leftovers of information. But that's NOT the case with "Best Dives' Snorkeling Adventures." This book does an excellent job of listing and rating snorkeling sites around the world (though mostly near the USA, Caribbean, and northern South America). It lists recommended dive shops in those areas, and even offers suggestions of where to stay. And best of all? It's for those of us who SNORKEL.
I hope that when they put out a 4th edition, Huber, ... Read More:

. On Island Time: Kayaking the Caribbean
City Travel Guides > Books > Caribbean
by: Scott B. Williams
April 06, 2005
I usually love escapist books of this nature. With this one, I find myself vaguely disappointed. While the writing itself is not bad, some areas are breezed over, and details vary, depending on Scott's memory, most likely. I suppose the biggest disappointment is that the Carribean is now almost exclusively private or government property, and there is almost nowhere to go anymore to discover anything new. He describes a few spectacular coves and tiny islands he explored, usually with others, but 80% of the content deals with avoiding private property and bribing foreign officals with rum from the folks he's hitched a ride with over most of the journey. In all, the book doesn't make me want to go adventuring, to see "what's over that horizon" because ... Read More:

. Adventure Guide to Puerto Rico, Fourth Edition
City Travel Guides > Books > Caribbean
by: Kurt Pitzer, Tara Stevens
2001-08
This review focuses on the section that drew me toward the book, the surf section (page 151). The author seems to have conducted some research about the names of some breaks but completely overestimated surf heights. For example La Marginal in Arecibo never, EVER reaches 25 feet. And if Los Tubos could reach 25 feet, then I'm 23 feet tall (8 foot maximum surf height seems more appropriate). In fact only a handful of breaks around the island legitimately reach 15ft plus. Make no mistake, surfing around the island can be a bit treacherous, specially for the inexperienced, but the book exaggerates maximum heights two fold sometimes maximum heights are even 3 times smaller than reported here. Just thought I'd mention this for the sake of accuracy. For more ... Read More:

. Fodor's Bahamas 2008 (Fodor's Gold Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Caribbean
by: Fodor's
October 02, 2007
Like F. Douglass (FD), I went to Grand Bahama - not during the holidays as FD had - and experienced similar disappointments, having used this book as a guide. When I travel I stick to local cuisine, but not after realizing the author of this guidebook glorified substandard restaurants (as well as attractions). For example, I finally found the "mini crab festival" restaurant that FD wrote about, which was a dark, dingy snackbar. The cook showed me a meat stew that has crab as an ingredient, which is the extent of this "famous" crab festival. I do not recommend purchasing this travel guide, and having had great experiences using Rough Guides and Frommer's, almost swore off Fodor's b/c of this misleading Bahamas issue. However, I learned that other Fodor's authors accurately ... Read More:
