This book has not only convinced me that I can take my own boat down to the Caribbean, but is helping me plan that trip. Despite being packed with lots of detailed, useful information, it is written in a lively style, with a wonderful dry sense of humor. Since I haven't yet sailed to the Caribbean, I can't vouch for the accuracy of the information, but it appears to be based on extensive experience sailing in this area. Mr. Weatheritt makes a wonderful armchair companion as I dream about leaving the rat race and sailing south next winter.

Paul Crask's guide is by far the best guide on Dominica ever written. We've been there countless times and know tons of locals and yet learned a wealth of new information about natural features and activities as well as cultural trivia. The online update to this guide is indispensable as well, and includes the luxurious Calibishie Cove resort. Great job, Paul Crask. We'd also recommend Lennox Honychurch's books on Dominica, particularly its history.

This is a physically heavy but informationally lightweight guide for crusing in the Caribbean. It is good but not great. We found it only slightly useful, preferring the Insight Guide Caribbean Cruises for more content and especially the "Cruising the Eastern Caribbean" more suitable to our nature oriented tastes. The latter book covers only EASTERN islands.

Before purchasing this book, I did a bit of research on the different guides available. One had a lot of advertisements, but was popular. It was more like a Frommers travel book. This one was written by the guy who actually used equipment relied upon by chartmakers for local depth soundings. You could tell by his "local" hints that he really took the time and effort to give you the insider's view. From recomming "Mr.Fantastic" (a local boat vendor who sold us delicious lobster), to recommendations on local restaurants at each of our island stops along the way, this book was fantastic. It was wonderful to see Habana in the days of my grandparents and parents.I remember so much of my short [8yrs] in Habana.I left in 1960 and returned for a visit in 1991. It was great to see the comparisons of the pictures in the book so artfully done. Very much like the comparisons in my mind when I went back. The only thing missing was pictures of greater Habana.All the surounding suburbs also have their story.

As a Trinidadian, who left the island as a teenager, and who now resides in the U.S., I wanted to learn more about the "attractions" of the country during an extended trip back. I found this book to be EXTREMELY helpful, and I made extensive use of the road maps provided. In particular, the maps in the guide give terrific details about where sites are located. In fact, they are more detailed than any other map that I was able to locate, while in Trinidad. In general, the book's material is very up-to-date, pertinent, and enjoyable to read. Hats off to the authors!

Great book to throw in your backpack and take with you on the cruise. You can bone up on a bit of the history and it will get some ideas ffor excursions or places to visit on the islands.

My mom and I both recently read this book and our reactions were the same as we discussed our thoughts. When we were finished with the book, there was a sense of something missing. The sub-title of the book - "My Life in Moscow, Beijing, and Havana" - is misleading. It should have been "My Visits to Moscow and Beijing and My Spur-of-the-Moment Holiday in Havana." Ms. Griest didn't really have a life in any of those places. It would be like me writing a book called, "My Life in Thailand, Germany,and Puerto Rico." All places I have spent some time, but my "life" is where I have resided for many years.
