. The Rough Guide to Trinidad & Tobago
City Travel Guides > Books > Caribbean
by: Rough Guides
December 17, 2007
As a Trinidadian, who left the island as a teenager, and who now resides in the U.S., I wanted to learn more about the "attractions" of the country during an extended trip back. I found this book to be EXTREMELY helpful, and I made extensive use of the road maps provided. In particular, the maps in the guide give terrific details about where sites are located. In fact, they are more detailed than any other map that I was able to locate, while in Trinidad. In general, the book's material is very up-to-date, pertinent, and enjoyable to read. Hats off to the authors!

. Dominican Republic & Haiti (Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Caribbean
by: Paul Clammer, Jens Porup
October 01, 2008
I ordered this book because I thought it would provide an introduction to the politics of the Dominican Republic. When I got it, it reminded me more of a mixture between a tacky guidebook and an elementary school social science book. It does present some insight into the historical, economical and political conditions of the country, some of them even differing from the mainstream image, but it is all very limited in scope and not very useful. If you want a guidebook, I'd suggest Lonely Planet a million times before this one. When it comes to a political review of the country, I have unfortunately had difficulties in finding one. But surfing the web for a couple of hours will certainly provide more useful information than a copy of this book.

. An Island Called Home: Returning to Jewish Cuba
City Travel Guides > Books > Caribbean
by: Ruth Behar
2007-10
Dr. Ruth Behar has written an insightful book about the Jews of Cuba and personal memories of the island passed down to her from family members who left Cuba after Fidel Castro's revolution. Although Dr. Behar was only a child when she left Cuba with her family and had no personal memories of the events that happend during her childhood, her many trips to Cuba as an anthropologist have allowed her to recreate that period of history and update it to the current time. Her emotional interviews with Jews still living in Cuba have allowed her to document how Jewish lives and the practice of Judaism have evolved through three time periods; 1)Prior to the revolution, 2) During Cuba's officially atheistic period, 1959-1992, and 3) During its secular ... . Robert Polidori: Havana
City Travel Guides > Books > Caribbean
from: Steidl
August 02, 2001
There are two principal cities in the world where time seems to stand still. One is Pripyat' Ukraine which was abandoned following the Chernobyl disaster in April, 198. In that unfortunate time literally all the people left within 24 hours. The other is Havana whose middle and upper classes departed over several decades following the Cuban Revolution mainly to live in the United States.
Unlike Pripyat' where vegetation and wildlife replaced human inhabitants, the City of Havana lives on despite its painful decay.
Robert Polidori's Havana depicts several days in the life of the city in the early years of the new century. Probably by chance, the period he photographed represented simultaneously the zenith and nadir of ... Read More:
