. Stardust
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Neil Gaiman
August 29, 2006
If you like fantasy stories filled with magic, adventure and romance, but are getting sick and tired of boring, long-winded fantasy epics, then look no further than "Stardust." There are no long histories, family trees or endless descriptions of culture, landscapes and back-story. This is just a sweet, simple fairytale told by a great storyteller. Though be warned - the original fairytales were not written for children, and "Stardust" follows in their literary footsteps, by including several violent, sensual and bittersweet scenes. It might be tempting to read this book aloud to children (particularly if you've seen the recent movie adaptation), but this is something I would strongly advise against!

. The Complete Far Side 1980-1994 (2 vol set)
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Gary Larson, Steve Martin
2003-10
The Far Side by Gary Larson is such a great comic strip. This collection of The Far Side consists of two impressive volumes which are beautifully bound and printed. They are also quite heavy! Going through these books entertained me greatly. I saw some strips I don't recall ever reading. I saw some that perhaps I had read before, but since it had been so many years I was able to enjoy them as if I had read them for the first time. And there were still others that I remember from the past, and it was great to be able to relive them again. In all of those cases the comic strips were as funny as ever and I was able to really enjoy going through all of them. Some of the comics appear in color, while some appear in black and white.

. The Umbrella Academy Volume 1 (Umbrella Academy)
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Gerard Way
July 16, 2008
I didn't laugh, didn't care and had to push myself really hard to finish this barely readable comic. The art is fine. This story is not. Well if you could really call it a story. It's a mish-mash of hastily thrown together parts that certainly doesn't add up to anything much. It took me about 10 attempts to get through it. I put in down on several occasions threw sheer frustration at the juvenile story and dialogue. The worst thing you can say about a comic or any story for that matter is when you just aren't interested in finding out what happens next and what happens to the characters. WHO CARES was the resounding answer for me with this comic unfortunately. This is the worst comic I have read in a very long time.

. This Is the Part Where You Pretend to Add Value: A Dilbert Book (Dilbert Books (Paperback Andrews McMeel))
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Scott Adams
May 01, 2008
I confess that I am a fan of Scott Adams' "Dilbert" strips, (particularly his current strips, which I find more amusing than his earlier strips, although there was some good work there.) I like the addition of color to all the strips because this makes them for some reason very pleasant to look at, and "Catbert, Evil director of human resources " is always the proper devilish red. I'm not much into making comparisons between one collection and another, but for me Mr. Adams work is only getting more to my liking, more absurd, playful, even "Monty Python-ish" lately. I've really enjoyed his latest collection, and I look forward to the next.

. Batman: The Man Who Laughs
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Ed Brubaker
January 30, 2008
This is the first thing I've ever read from Brubaker, so I don't have much to go on in terms of how different or new it is from his other stuff. What I can say, is that it's a much better written Joker story compared to a lot of the other ones out there. The book builds nice tension up until the last confrontation Batman and Joker have; which I felt was very lackluster and not even close to as memorable at The Killing Jokes end. The Joker taking over televison and what not is old at this point. However, the additional story of the Green Lantern I thought was great, that managed to invoke more emotion from me than the TMWL. What is top-notch here is the art. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the Joker as it is a short and fun read.

. Marvel Zombies 2
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Robert Kirkman
July 09, 2008
Blasphemy! All your childhood heroes, reduced to braindead, psychotic, maggot-infested, sloppy soulless idiots craving human flesh. Oh joy.
I wonder with all the superhero movies coming out, the interest in the comic books had been slipping. Maybe something drastic needed to be done to rejuvinate the guys in leotards. Why not make them zombies?
Well, it's a pretty fun trip. Luckily this wastes no time with any long explanations or story development. Many of our good guys are zombified, trapped in another dimension with an insatiable craving for human flesh.
Watch an evil Spidey, Cap, Wolvie, Hulk, Thor and others try to hunt down and devour the unchanged Magneto, Silver Surfer, or whoever they can find to supress their ... Read More:
