. Those Left Behind (Serenity)
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Joss Whedon, Brett Matthews, Will Conrad
February 08, 2006
I've been back into comics in a big way as I fight kicking and screaming my way into middle agedom. I picked this one up in a binge of comics including Alias, Supreme Power, Marvels, Kingdom Come, Batman Arkham Asalyum, and the Ultimates.
Next to Batman Arkham, this is my least favorite. It was too short and too small for the cost. It can be read in under half an hour which is a poor dollar per hour piece of entertainment.
The story is very good, very much a story of Serenity and does well bridging the gap between the shows and the movies. However it is simply too small and limited to be remembered. I liked the story but I am not happy with the purchase. I plan to give my copy to SF friends of mine just to try to squeeze ... Read More:

. The Boys Volume 2: Get Some TPB
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson
March 03, 2008
This second volume of "The Boys" collects the first story arc from Dynamite Comics. It's easy to see why the book was dropped by DC: The characters are crude, the humor is dark, and the superheroes (clearly parodies of DC's characters) are just plain filthy. The first and second volumes are carried by their shock value alone. Ennis has said that he intends the series to go 60 issues... I'm not sure if the characters here are strong enough to stay interesting that long, as the one-dimensionality of the shock tactics wears off after repeat readings. But if you want to see superheroes doing awful things with gerbils, then you need to read at least the first two volumes of "The Boys."

. The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Sid Jacobson, Ernie Colon
August 22, 2006
The 9/11 Report is a straightforward, full-color graphic novel adaptation of the final report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States. Featuring a foreword Thomas H. Kean and Lee H. Hamilton, the Chair and Vice Chair of the 9/11 Commission, The 9/11 Report distills the report's findings concerning how the attacks happened, America's subsequent response, and the glaring weaknesses in America's security. Perhaps the most troubling part of The 9/11 is its postscript, which lists letter grades of America's actions to make itself more secure up through 2006 - most of the grades are C's, D's, and F's. "Progress in many important areas has been slow or nonexistent. While the terrorists have been learning and adapting, we have been moving ... Read More:

. Alan Moore's Writing For Comics Volume 1
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Alan Moore, Jacen Burrows
June 24, 2003
Worth it. I am a striving comic creator who works and won't have time to read as much as I did this last summer. If you're a striving comic creator this is great book about the medium not because it teaches you how to write, but because it invokes you to create. The things I already knew that Moore talks about helps reinforce good points of story telling while interjecting Moore's insights to writing.
Warning: You might have to look up some Moore References. As usual, Moore's has a few obscure references you might not have heard or read about. I know who "Eddie Campbell" is to comics but since the essay is older "Campbell" is treated as an unknown source in Moore's Essay. Still I feel since I'm rereading the "Watchmen" this is a "must have" because it gives ... Read More:

. Ultimate X-Men Vol. 18: Apocalypse
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Robert Kirkman
August 13, 2008
I was reviewing an Ultimate Fantastic Four volume and started thinking about one of the main problems I have with the Ultimate universe line: that so many characters and events are brought about because it seems like the writers have to mirror what's happened in the original 616 universe. And not only are they brought to mirror 616, but characters are killed off or storylines are resolved so fast that there's little reason to care.
This volume is the best example I can think of. In the 616 Apocalypse is a major villain. He does not appear every other month with a standard scheme for a major heist or conquering the world or whatever. He is the type of character that figures in major crossovers and world-changing events.
He is one of the oldest and most ... Read More:

. Ronin
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Frank Miller
March 01, 1995
The best graphic novels pull you into a world that may be bizarre, fanciful or exotic, but completely captivating. Ronin makes that grade easily. Beginning as a medieval samurai tale of blood and honor, the tale fast forwards to the near future, where a female supercomputer and a limbless man with unusual mental powers sit at the nexus of a world of biocircuitry in which machines self-assemble without human intervention. There are evil geniuses, demons, and nasty rbots. There are terrific fight scenes, some of which take place in the minds of the the characters. You won't always know what's going on, and a rereading wll be rewarding. But "Ronin"is a rewarding and highly crafted piece divesion that is well worth the time it taks to read and figure out.
