. Swamp Thing Vol. 1: Saga of the Swamp Thing
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Alan Moore
February 23, 1998
With Swamp Thing, Alan Moore, one of the most talented authors in comic book history, rewrote the rules. I picked this up 20 years ago and am still amazed. Steve Bissette and John Totleben are probably my favorite art team in the history of comics. This is close to their start, so it's a little rough around the edges, but still way above and beyond the vast majority of most illustrators out there. Steve drew the amazing layouts, destroying storyboard conventions, and John tightened the loose sketches up into works of art. This was hugely influential when it came out, and still a highlight of work in graphic storytelling to this day. Many people copied, but few could rival, Alan Moore's dark and serious style.
This may not be well received ... Read More:

. Batman: The Man Who Laughs
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Ed Brubaker
January 30, 2008
This is the first thing I've ever read from Brubaker, so I don't have much to go on in terms of how different or new it is from his other stuff. What I can say, is that it's a much better written Joker story compared to a lot of the other ones out there. The book builds nice tension up until the last confrontation Batman and Joker have; which I felt was very lackluster and not even close to as memorable at The Killing Jokes end. The Joker taking over televison and what not is old at this point. However, the additional story of the Green Lantern I thought was great, that managed to invoke more emotion from me than the TMWL. What is top-notch here is the art. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the Joker as it is a short and fun read.

. Shards (Star Wars: Legacy, Vol. 2)
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: John Ostrander
April 02, 2008
This is the 2nd collected volume in the Star Wars: Legacy series (taking place 125 after Return of the Jedi). It collects issues 8, 4, 9, 10, 13, 11, and 12 from the original comic release.
Yes, you read that right. The stories are presented out of order from their first run, though this seems to be a creative choice. This volume is comprised of several smaller arcs detailing the Imperial side of the war, with some one-off tales in between. The stories give an insightful look into Legacy characters including Emperor-in-exile Roan Fel, the traitorous Moffs who first allied with the Sith, and a Stormtrooper squad ordered to eliminate some of their own. The bad news is that Cade Skywalker, the series protagonist, only appears in the last two chapters (Issue 13 was moved ... Read More:

. Batman: A Death in the Family
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Jim Starlin, Jim Aparo, Mike DeCarlo
December 01, 1995
This is a decent story which is mainly well known for the out come rather than a great story. This is something I would recommend to fans of Batman to read for the sake of the importance to the Batman story line, but I probably wouldn't recommend to many others. In fact even if you're a Batman fan and you don't have a lot of money to through around there a lot of other Batman stories I'd point to before this one. Now I don't want to say that this is that bad of a story I was entertained and never thought about not finishing reading it.
I think the biggest problem for me was the fact that most of the time it didn't feel like the Batman universe. It just seems odd having Batman run around in the Middle East. Now having been a fan of comics for a number of years now, ... Read More:
