Old-school X-Men action as our heroes go up against the Hellfire Club. Though ultimately fairly accessible, this volume is a little more "inside baseball" than the previous two "Astonishing X-Men" collections. That is, it helps to know a little bit about the Hellfire Club, Emma Frost, and the X-Men's history with same.

Highlights include Emma Frost using truly devious psychology to incapacitate Scott (essentially shaming him into shutting down his powers, with horrible side effects) and Wolverine being converted into a turn-of-the-century effeminate dandy (and it's a hoot to see what finally breaks the spell to bring Logan back). I am a casual DC Comics fan who was much more into comics in my youth. I bought this encyclopedia because I used to enjoy reading "Who's Who," a series in the 80's that featured biographies of DC characters. The cover art on this is striking, done beautifully by Alex Ross. The biographies have all been updated, so it was nice to hear about what my favorite (or obscure) heroes and villians have been up to the last 10-20 years. The entries are generally well-written, though I have found an error here and there. Occasionally, an entry will say deceased, but not mention how or if the character died or not say deceased, but indicate in the entry that the character died. Also, this was produced before the "Infinite Crisis" series, which changed (and in some cases killed) ... Read More:

Shame on Erin for giving a cat like Graystripe such a poor style of book. He deserved a hard cover with out that horrible depiction of him. Graystripe is protrayed in the regular series as a strong beautiful cat, These comic books make him look comedic looser. Erin, What have you done to Graystripes image? It's been a long time since a writer has written a story that allowed the Hulk to let lose and have a lot of fun while doing it. An additional bonus was Bruce Banner's absense from the majority of the story.

Greg Pak did an amazing job with one of my favorite Marvel characters.
