. Coraline Graphic Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Neil Gaiman
June 24, 2008
I have to admit that most of my exposure to Gaiman is through the hands of other artists. In fact my introduction to Gaiman was via Dave McKean. While I did not read the printed version of "Coraline" the graphic edition caught my eye and I picked it up and found I could not put it down. Russell's visual adaptation gave me enough to establish boundaries, but left enough open visually for the head to bring the pages to life. I find interesting the genre of materials (books, movies, graphic novels, music) that are related through the eyes of children, but are best experienced by adults. "Coraline" fits this mold well. I watched Jan Svankmajer's "Little Oti" last night--I would place that in this pool as well.

. Maus II: A Survivor's Tale: And Here My Troubles Began (Maus)
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Art Spiegelman
September 01, 1992
I must say that I find this work hard to properly describe in terms of how I feel about it. I think that it was a fascinating look at one man's experience in the Holocaust, but an equally important aspect is Art's interaction with his father during their conversations. This seems like an honest portrayal, especially since Art isn't afraid to include things that may make himself or his father look bad (he isn't always the most sympathetic son, at times a narrow-minded father). I think connecting the story of what happened then, and how it's effects are apparent for the rest of a person's life (although different people reacted in different ways) is interesting. The way this is written is especially effective, because it truly feels like Vladek is telling you ... Read More:

. Green Lantern: The Sinestro Corps War, Vol. 1
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Geoff Johns, Dave Gibbons, Ethan Van Sciver
February 20, 2008
In two parts covering different aspects:
1. Quality of the story - Lots of action, lots of great banner artwork of lots of heroes fighting lots of bad guys. If you know the characters you will care and know if so many who die really matter. To me they just seemed like a lot of red shirts.
These grand stories usually fail because they try to cover too much and use every character that ever existed. This series is far from being a failure, but it still left me feeling like something was missing. It does manage to establish several important milestones in the Green Lantern mythos, so in that regard it succeeded. The plot elements are all there, but the execution was uneven. For example, it seems like the power of the rings can be made by anybody ... Read More:

. Y: The Last Man Vol. 2: Cycles
City Travel Guides > Books > Comics and Graphic Novels
by: Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra, Jose Marzan
September 01, 2003
The first book in Brian K. Vaughan's Y: THE LAST MAN set up the premise: all the males in the world of every species have died except for loser named Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand. In the chaos that follows American society is oppressed by totalitarian Amazons, who are marked ideologically by an intense detestation of all things male (in later books they will even try to tear down structures they imagine are male) and by their ill-informed attempt to mimic Amazons by cutting off one breast (actually, there is no good evidence that the mythical Amazons removed a breast so as to be better archers, and I've been told by women who are actually good with a bow that there is no physiological reason to need to do so).
In this book Yorick, Ampersand, ... Read More:
