.Essential Thai Phrase Book (Essential Phrasebook Series) City Travel Guides > Books > Essential by: Benjawan Jai-Ua, Michael Golding April 15, 2003 I bought both the Periplus Thai Dictionary and the Phrase book and was very disappointed in each. They are very basic and use some transliteration that is inaccurate. There are no 'bp' or 'dt' sounds given. These sounds are lumped together as 'p' and 't' respectively, which is simplistic and misleading. Also the books' transliteration aviods the 'eu' sounds, (written as 'ue') wish is also simplistic, inaccurate, and leads to mispronuciation of many, many, Thai words. .Essential Chinese For Travelers City Travel Guides > Books > Essential by: Zhilong Fan March 10, 2006 This is a handy reference to 2,000 common words and phrases in Chinese. As of this writing, February 2007, you could go to China Books and Periodicals website and download the audio in MP3 form for free. That's right, $0. I downloaded the MP3, and listen to it at home. It takes a little over an hour to get through the 2,000 words and phrases. The expression is first given in English, then a man speaks the equivalent slowly in Chinese, followed by a woman who repeats the phrase more rapidly in Chinese. This book gets right to the point and is chock full of information, while it seems other books say a lot of things such as "find out what poison ivy looks like" or "learn how to use a compass" this book actually gives you the information. It also has great (b&w) pictures which are relevant and helpful. The writing is rich in colorful, touching, scary, revealing details that tend to get filtered out of official and semi-official reports. I found the discussions of deforestation, landmines, and security particularly helpful. The book explains accurately the difference between modern solid-deck snowshoes and traditional webbed deck designs, that being floatation. The tradition wooden snowshoes have greater floatation.
