. Ireland For Dummies (Dummies Travel)
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Elizabeth Albertson
February 27, 2007
I was given the opportunity to speak at a user group meeting in Dublin this upcoming June, and I decided I didn't want to be completely ignorant about the country. While it won't be a touring vacation, I'd still like to know a bit more about where I'll be visiting. To that end, I received a review copy of Ireland for Dummies by Liz Albertson. It's a fun and easy read, and at least I won't be a *completely* stupid American tourist now.

. Between the Woods and the Water: On Foot to Constantinople: From The Middle Danube to the Iron Gates (New York Review Books Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Patrick Leigh Fermor
October 03, 2005
This book and its sequel, "Between the Woods and the Water," is truly a classic of the personal odyssey genre. Together they are the report by the English author of a diary he wrote between the ages of 19 and 22 while he walked from Holland to Istanbul. But he writes his report after a lengthy career in military service and, among other things, in journalism. The result combines the enthusiasm of a young student with the measured and spare prose of a seasoned and skilled veteran. The author as student is amazingly well schooled, even though thrown out of his public school. His reflections on what he sees are both erudite and almost poetic. (Read, e.g., the chapter, Prague Under Snow.) They don't serve as a normal travel guide, but they'll introduce ... Read More:

. A Year in the Merde
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Stephen Clarke
May 02, 2006
Sadly, this is a book that falls victim to misleading advertising. The title and book description would lead one to assume this to be a travel memoir about our hero's experiences trying to get a chain of British tea rooms off the ground in France.
If you buy, or as I (fortunately) did, borrow the book from your library it won't take you long to come to the conclusion that in an attempt to make the book saleable and "real" the thing is written less as a travel memoir and more as a sexual misadventure. For, in truth the main recurring theme of this book is the narrator's failed attempts to bed women...any women...women he barely knows and for whom he doesn't care.
Now that's fine and I'm sure the hero of A Year In The Merde is not the first, nor will ... Read More:

. Michelin Ireland/Irlande (Michelin)
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
from: Michelin Travel Publications
February 28, 2007
My husband, who has a fondness for detailed maps, absolutely adores this map of Ireland. Compared to the other ones we looked at, it was by far the largest and most detailed, showing the most towns and cities and roads on one map. Other maps only show you main cities and main roads and the color coding can be distracting. This map is clear and has a very extensive legend showing places of interest and historical sites.
We are using this map to plan our trip to Ireland. It's tacked up on the wall so as we look through travel guide books, we can find the locations on the big map and plan our driving trip accordingly.
As for using this map while actually in Ireland remains to be seen. I doubt the size will lend itself to ease of use (unfolding it in a car might ... Read More:
