I've bought the Rick Steves phrase books (which are the best, by the way) but this was my first of his guide books and, I have to say, I'm hooked. I absolutely love his list of the top sights. Not only does he rank order them from the must-see to the could-probably-miss, but he includes a very brief description of the site, the days and hours it's open (great for planning!), and the page number you can go to for more in-depth information. I put a post-it note on this page and was constantly referring back to it. Now that I'm old (well, 33), I felt it was time to graduate from the rough guide/lonely planet Paris guidebooks that I normally use and pick up one that covers more high-end suggestions than I could afford when I started visiting Paris 15 years ago. Flipped a coin between Frommers and Fodors, and got this one.

If this is your first trip to Paris and you want to make sure you know what the must-sees are, this is a great book to have. There are plenty of lists of "Best Restaurants", "Top Museums", 1-3 day walking itineraries, etc. There's a nice mix of hotel and restaurant recommendations for all budgets.

I was so exited about the course because of amounts of good reviews it has.... However a total disappointment... So boring and repeatitive that I didn't even finish the 3rd lesson!!! They read and explain 5 times for about 10 minutes a 1 minute conversation. For me it was a waste of money. I would not recommend it.

I've read five of Bryson's books so far, but this one has put the nail in the coffin for me-there will be no more Bryson books for a while. I'm about half way through it but am finding it increasingly difficult to tolerate Bryson's mean-spirited remarks about people he's never met. Bryson's comment that an overweight teenager was a, "greedy, fat, pig" wasn't funny at all. It was just mean, plain and simple...and this coming from an author who needs to take a look at himself in the mirror. In the last Bryson book I read, his wife comments that all he does is, "b**ch, b**ch, b**ch. I agree with her. I find this book to be repeatedly filled with whining, and mean-spirited comments about people Bryson has never met and places he doesn't spend enough time in to know anything ... Read More:

I just got back from Italy and the Greek Islands and I used this book and other Eyewitness books to learn about each one I visited. The Eyewitness series has a lot of great information about the history of the area and points of interest including lots of gorgeous photos. However, I wish the Eyewitness series would include more "survival" type information such as transportation, restaurants, etc. so that they could be the only guide I need to take. I felt like I needed another guide for that type of information and I did not want to carry more books!

This author can write! Her descriptions of people, environments, food and relationship are first class.

Unlike the first three books that were memoirs of her travels and life with her husband, A Thousand Days in Venice, A Thousand Days in Tuscany, and The Lady in the Palazzo, this book is really Tosca Brazzi's story as told to Marlena.

De Blasi descriptions of simple, everyday things are strong, such as: Unskilled, unshy hands pounded scales on the piano." I could hear the music and see that person working the keys.

I bought this book in preparation for a trip to Ireland, not only our first time there, but our first time in Europe. I had heard the Eyewitness travel books were wonderful, which is why I selected this one. I was not disappointed. It was incredibly helpful; pictures and text.
