I have used the Eyewitness guides for several other countries. The Alaska guide has the same beautiful color pictures but the city & tour info was nat as complete as some of the other guides. I ended up borrowing a Fodor's guide from a friendFodor's Alaska 2007 (Fodor's Gold Guides)

Thinking of visiting Philadelphia and the surrounding region? This is an awfully good introduction to the area and a fine resource for visitors and tourists. Is it perfect? No. Is it helpful? Yes indeed!

The Eyewitness folks have developed a series of books termed "Eyewitness Travel" that are quite nice. This volume begins with context about the city, including comments on its history and a quick survey of some special attractions.

Next, the book focuses on Philadelphia, area by area. Old City is, of course, especially interesting, containing many sights dating back to the city's earlier era, including the Betsy Ross House, Elfreth's Alley (the oldest continually inhabited street in the United States), and Independence ... Very pretty photos which give you a good idea of Provence but instead of so many photos I wish there were more listings of hotels and restaurants. I found the information a little too spare and bought a different guide book instead.

I purchased this guide and the new england guide as a package deal from Amazon.
This was a mistake since the boston chapter in the new england book gives the same info as this one.

aside from this, the book is great as any of the Eyewitness books I purchased so far.

This book makes it easy to review each section of Venice to decide where you want to go and where you do not want to go. I am an artists who has been painting for many decades and what I wanted to do was determine where paintings where that I needed to see for my work. It is not just for art, shopping guides and sites are there also. I purchased it because it was rated the highest and after reading it I agree. Very easy to follow. (I also picked up 'Top Ten Venice' and it did give good information on museums, sites to see and also a section on getting around but was not as detailed as 'Venice and the Veneto'. I recently visited Milan and the Lakes and this book was by far my saving grace. It was my first time visiting Milan and I was able to navigate myself around as if I was a local! Some of my favorite things about the book are the following:
1. The book is broken up by the sections of Milan i.e. Northwest, Northeast, Historic Center etc. This made my daily planning very easy!
2. Each highlighted historic site has a brief background and summary about its amazing past along with a "visitor's checklist". It was my private tour guide!
3. A subway map is included to make getting around the city effortless.
4. A map was included (with detailed street names) for each section.

The Guide is great to get an overview over the many attractions in Bali - lots of pictures and some nice overview maps of the island's regions. However, the descriptions are on the short side and it does not contain detailed street maps that could be useful for orientation. But overall a nice introduction!

I heard about DK guides through several friends of mine.

I visisted Munich and Bamburg. I found the pictures and recommended walks to be very helpful.

I have two major issues with the guide. The first is that it is light on hotels and restaurants. Their idea of moderately expensive is also outside of the range of most younger travelers. Their hotel and restaurant recommendations are, however, very well suited to couples and well-off travelers. Unlike Lonely Planet Guides, DK focuses on the sites and culture of the locations in it. It does not go into internet sites, hostels, laundry sites or rail/bus information. This makes is slightly incomplete for less structured travelers, like myself.

I used this guide for a 2 day trip to Tokyo. I found that the city is a collection of different areas, each with its own vibe and things to do. The book does a good job of telling you what those differences are. As with other Eyewitness guides, it has an excellent set of pictures, some drawings and some photos, with annotations to help you understand them. The guide for restaurants was limited, but excellent. We used it to find a terrific sushi restaurant in Shibuya--Sushi Ouichi. I kept this book for my next trip. The maps were somewhat helpful. However, Tokyo is a maze of small streets. You'll need a much better map to find something off the main streets, and even then it will be challenge. The map for the sushi restaurant showed it on the right street but the wrong block.
