Burt, Linda Perlis March 04, 2008 I bought this new book because it was the most recently published and sounded great. It is not great for a number of reasons. First, it is heavily weighted toward trips with tweens and teens rather than younger children. I was planning a trip with children 6-8 years old. Most of the recommended places are recommended for tweens and teens. In fact, had I not known better from friends, I would have skipped the International Spy Museum altogether, because the guide recommends it for "older tweens and teens" and makes it sound beyond the understanding of a younger child. It features wonderful information on where the best sightseeing, dining, nightlife, shopping, and culture is in Portland and the surrounding areas. The book cherry-picks from everything the area has to offer and includes only the things really worth searching out. Shanghai is hard to describe in a book as is most of China. The moreso as there is little visible history in Shanghai compared to a city like Beijing. Each page spread lists a different site that is kid-friendly. The top of the page has a quick reference: hours, admission, recommended ages, contact information. Then there's a quick synopsis of the site, along with some "Keep in Mind" info, "Eats for Kids," and "Hey, Kids!" that provide some important details. I especially like that it give some little hints, such as where to park, arrive early, the layout is set up well for families, etc. And because it's small, it would be easy to tuck into a diaper bag or backpack for an outing.
