Great history and background. A little critical of the so-called Singapore Miracle -- but that is not a stance without merit. (After all, it's the most successful totalitarian state on the planet!)

Note that this second edition was written in 2000, and is missing some important details (like the fact that there is a Chinatown stop on the MRT these days; or the fact that the Chinese Heritage museum has been completely re-done as a multimedia experience akin to the Asian Civilizations Museum -- and while a little hokey is quite effective at communicating the history of the Chinese experience in Singapore; etc.)

Definitely more meat to this guidebook than most.

I am currently traveling in Brazil with this book, and it frustrates me so much that I'm actually paying money at this internet cafe to prevent others from experiencing the same pain.
I bought this book because it was the most recent guidebook for Brazil, and because several people referred to Footprint as "the Bible for South America." I suppose that analogy is accurate--like the Bible, this book is awkwardly worded, cryptic and useless for day-to-day logistics. But I have several more specific complaints. Open to the very first page, and you encounter a theme for the entire book: a featureless, useless map and confusing editorial errors. I travelled to Syria and Jordan this November, armed with my first Footprint guide book, and I'm now a convert. It is especially good in giving out well written historical background and cultural titbids that just make the trip so much more rewarding. Lonely Planet and Rough Guides are sooooo shallow by comparison.

I was ready to burn this heavy book within four days of arriving in Peru. While the book has a lot of information regarding locations of sites, locations of hotels, and locations of restaurants, it doesn't tell you much about those places. Many of the hotels had clearly never been visited by the writers. All of the restaurants we went to that were listed in this book were tourist traps with food that was mediocre at best. Just because it lists every hotel does not mean that it's a good guide. I recommend 'Let's Go' instead. Though it is smaller and covers three countries instead of just Peru, 'Let's Go' seemed to have more useful information, even for those of us who are not student backpackers.

Having used Footprint Borneo during a recent visit to Sabah, we used Travel Guide extensively. And while it is not altogether current, it is the best treatment on subject currently available (Nov 2006). Just as I would recommend the book, I highly would suggest visiting area!
