Having just returned from my 2nd trip to Scotland, and this time touring the Highlands, this book was by far the most complete and comprehensive of any guide book I used. It gave phone numbers, things not to miss, and even included info on "things to do on Skye when it rains" (which it did almost daily). I appreciated the maps and the little historical notes they wrote. I would recommend this book to anyone going to The Highlands for their first - or tenth - time. The only other thing you will need is an English - Gaelic dictionary.

footprints south america guide concentrates on the travel aspect of south america with much more detail than lonely planet. it delves into many areas which the lonely planet guide doesnt even mention. having road tested both against each other, this one comes out on top for anyone moving even slightly from the beaten path.
much more comprehensive coverage of argentina in particuliar. seems more up to date than lonely planet.

It's not that this book is so bad, it's simply that it isn't worth the superlatives heaped on it by the other reviewers.
Although it is nice enough, it simply wasn't practical for bare-knuckle travelling. Having left behind the much more detailed (and therefore more informative) Bradt guides for Uganda, Ethiopia and Zanzibar (yeah, shame on me for being such a fool), I purchased this last minute substitute in an airport enroute.
It was a pleasant read, but not very helpful in trying to determined the easiest, cheapest or most enjoyable mode of transport from point A to point B - whether that was from town to town, or from airport to sleeping accomodations.

I was saddened by this review. As author of Footprint's Bolivia Handbook, and someone who lived in La Paz for a while, I have a deep affection for the country and its people. The accusation that I "speak in a very bad way" about the country is deeply offensive and shows that the reader hasn't bothered to read the text thoroughly before sharing their views. This guidebook is by no means perfect - no guidebook every can be - but at least it strives to be honest. Sometimes, unfortunately, certain people take exception to this policy.

Anne & Keith McLachlan have covered just every possible track and hamlet with the wide open eyes of the first world tourist. If there is a bus or lorry going from one remote place to another, they mention it, plus the condition of the track, the lodging, the food and what have you. They not only give thourough info on history, geology, politics and social structure, but also on how to handle harassing 'guides'and others. This book is in my opinion the best so far. I've been in Morocco twice now and this book beats the guide by The Lonely Planet, The Rough Guide and the French: Maroc, edition Gallimard. However, if you prefer beautiful photo's, this book is not the one. In that case the French guide beats them all.

We lived in Guatemala City for 2 years and found most of the other guidebooks for Guatemala spoke of really interesting things the average city dweller couldn't get to on long weekends out from Guatemala City (such as Alta Verapaz). Footprints is chock full of interesting things to do within a four hour drive of Guatemala City which made it perfect for us. We found Footrints far superior to Let's Go and Lonely Planet.

Excellent guide that seems well researched and geared for the middle income tourist (very rare in guidebooks). Comprehesive and up to date prices and listings were evident throughout. Only shortcoming was a decidedly leftist bent in the book's extensive history and cultural sections that is overly sycophantic and apologetic to the the illegal Vietnamese invasion and its subsequent occupation/exploitation of the nation from the 1950s to 1980s. Also overt propaganda excusing the oppressive Prathet Lao attrocities is evident in its sprinkling throughout the book. As this is a trend in LP and Rough Guides as well, I suppose I cannot blame this young author too for falling into the "Khao san Road journalist" trap. But overall, outside of the naiive ...
