. Mile High: Men in Motion, Book 1
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: G. A. Hauser
July 10, 2008
This book has some hilarious moments. Owen Brayden, the mild mannered accountant from LA has got more than he can handle with Texas born Taylor Madison. When they meet on a plane and try to connect in the bathroom, the situation is a riot. Owen's perspective on the risk and daring of the deed makes him the perfect comic foil for Taylor's bold confidence. The two hit it off instantly and the attachment is both exciting and sweet. When they begin some bedroom games it's even wilder and I laughed out loud. Great fun, good sex, and a wonderful Book 1 to a Men In Motion series I'm looking forward to.

. Strings Attached
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Nick Nolan
April 19, 2006
I just finished reading `Strings Attached' for the second time last night, and I'm just as curious to know what happens next as I was when I read it over a year ago. The writing is fast paced, and has moments approaching some of the best literature I've read. Nolan has a gift for description, so you can really see what is happening in the story. I especially loved the scenic descriptions and the relationship between Jeremy and Arthur, and how many surprises and twists there are toward the end that I absolutely didn't see coming. The Pinocchio theme is subtle, so you can read this and enjoy it with or without knowing the references in the story. I loved this book, and can't wait to buy the sequel (when is it coming out???)

. His Name Is John
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Dorien Grey
May 30, 2008
Elliott Smith has a new roommate, who happens to be dead. Well, not really dead, since he "talks" to Elliott frequently, but Elliott knows he isn't alive because he saw him dead, on a gurney next to him in the emergency room at the hospital, when being treated there after being hit by a car while walking in downtown Chicago. Police found the dead man, who they have named "John Doe" for now, dead from gunshot wounds in an alley, about the time of Elliott's accident. Somehow, Elliott feels a connection to this individual, even though he doesn't recognize him as anyone he met while he was alive. And John's spirit becomes a presence that follows Elliott around, agreeing that his name is John, but he doesn't know anything else about who he might be. Once out ... Read More:

. The Flowers of Evil (Oxford World's Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Charles Baudelaire
May 15, 2008
Baudelaire's poetry is a potent brew of Poe's mystery/terror, Flaubert's realism, Byron's brand of romanticism and a touch Sade's sexual philosophy. Having said this however, I do not wish to say that Baudelaire's Fleur du Mal is derivative, far from it! In many ways, Baudelaire's poetry is like Manet's paintings, in the sense that Baudelaire's verse blazed a trail for later movements like impressionism and symbolism (but one could never truly say that he fully belonged in either school of art). Just as one could not say that Baudelaire is fully a Romantic poet (a particular label, which I find extremely unfounded). In short, Baudelaire is Baudelaire and no one else. This is exactly what makes his verse so fresh and exciting. Even if you might find his topic matter ... Read More:

. And Playing the Role of Herself
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: K. E. Lane
January 07, 2007
I'm straight and I loved this book. Terrific read and really well written. I usually hate books written in first person, but it didn't bother me one bit and it actually added to my enjoyment. This book is written from point of view of the wonderful main character, Caid. K E Lane's writing has a great conversational, casual style loaded with great details & nuances. She creates well drawn, multi-layered, real, and funny main characters and does the same for all the secondary characters. You know every character in the book very well and know exactly how and why they tick. Also, having worked in the film biz myself for many years, the setting only added to the fun for me.
As you've likely gathered from other reviews, Caid is an actress on a popular ... Read More:

. Nightwood
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Djuna Barnes
September 26, 2006
The early 20th century Modernists produced a number of remarkable books, but Djuna Barnes' NIGHTWOOD (1936) is one of the very strangest. The plot at its heart is simple, a lesbian love triangle where the passionate Nora Flood loves a young and enigmatic woman named Robin Vote, only to lose her to the conniving widow Jenny Petherbridge. This all unfolds among American and European expatriates in Paris in the 1920s, as royalty is dying out, the scars of World War I have still not healed, and belief in traditional religion is waning.
What makes NIGHTWOOD so odd is Barnes manner of describing this drama. Her writing is baroque, full of original metaphors and florid turns of phrase that may seem either revelatory or pretentious. Its most important character turns out ... Read More:
