WOW loved the story line in this book. The character build up was great and left you irritated that it took so long for them to get romantic but when it did WOW.

Like S. Ward, I like yaoi novels, but this one was so wretched I threw it out. I wouldn't even give it away, no yaoi fan should be subjected to this tripe. Why did I hate it so? The uke was likeable enough, but the seme was emotionally abusive. He rapes the uke, then pursues him like a stalker, getting angry if he even smiles at others. Eventually he passionately professes his love--and then the next day he casually sleeps with a 14 year old. When the uke confronts him about this, not only is he not ashamed about it, he laughs in his face! Maupin does have his characters and the readers who have grown to love them face some hard truths. Dramatic changes occur and old bonds are broken, but after all the upheaval, new possibilities emerge and what had seemed to be a sobering conclusion transforms into a promising new beginning.

Some cynics have claimed this is the book that turns the likeable and ambitious character of Mary Ann Singleton into a driven and cold-hearted monster. Is Swish funny? It's hilarious.

Is it about life as a gay man? Yup.

But that's really not the whole story. The heart of the book - for me - was about Joel's mother. His relationship with her, the way he tries to reconcile his love with the terrible things they experienced together (and that she said) broke my heart.

This is a very grown-up book. It's the kind of book where no one's really that great, much less perfect, but everyone receives a fair share of compassion from our gentle narrator.

I LOVED this book! The story was sexy and funny, and the sex was explicit and plentiful. The perfect recipe for yaoi. The book opens with Sagami "mounted atop" Tatsurou and about to collect on a debt. Only, the author flashes back to the preceding events just before the payoff. A truly delicious way to hook a reader.

Tatsurou is a yakuza. Only, the yakuza life isn't what it used to be. Sure, some people are afraid of him but his flashy car is borrowed and he barely makes enough money to live on. His role in the gang is to collect debts. When the gang president sends him to collect from an old man who owns a factory, Tatsurou runs into trouble. Kate Bornstein's writing is a pleasure to read! My Gender Workbook is a great way to start looking at nonstandard genders if you're used to thinking in strictly binary terms. While there's room in her viewpoint for girly girls and manly men, there's definitely a bit of bias towards transsexual and genderqueer folks. The quotes from different sources in the sidebar create a variety of perspectives on gender, in case you don't identify too strongly with Kate Bornstein's personal story (which, let's face it, isn't common to most of us).

If you're already breaking the gender binary- that is, if you're the sort of person who'd be interested in this book- then likely it wouldn't provide much more than some much-needed encouragement. However, if you're new to transgressing gender, ... Read More:

Thanks to her consistently involving stories and sympathetic (not to mention gorgeous!) characters, Shiuko Kano has become one of my top fave manga-kas(?). True to form, Ms. Kano's continuation of Tetsuo Atarashi's comedic saga of sexual confusion had me chuckling, panting, and slavering for Volume Three! Who will end up with who??? I just hope poor Momoyama gets his share...

Despite what others on here have written in reviews on here I found this book to be amazingly helpful. I am 40 years old and the section on coming out may have benefited me more when I was younger but I still was able to learn from each chapter in the book.

It has helped me to better understand myself and my interactions with others. Also, as much as I hate to admit it this book also helped me realize my own internalized homophobia and heterosexism.

This has also helped me in my relationships with friends and others. I now can now understand how things in my past "shadows" creep in to current events. Realizing them and dealing with them in a different way has been very beneficial to me and the man I am dating.

Up all night did NOT have me up all night... nor did it really hold my interest at all. It's your standard, poorly written erotica, relying on the sex scenes (which were sadly lacking) to make up for the lack of writing talent. Some stories (as always with this type of book) were better than others... but all failed to hold my attention. In fact, maybe I shouldn't review this at all here... since I didn't finish the book. I would not waste my money or time on this had I the chance to do it again.

I found myself laughing throughout the book. Very snappy writing and a story that I could identify with within my own relationship. The story echos today's society and the struggle (conflict) that a lot of relationships go through whether gay or straight. I think I loved the reactions of his son the best. A must read for anyone conflicted about marriage or a commitment ceremony.
