. Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and the Rest of Us
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Kate Bornstein
April 25, 1995
You know this is not a subject that I know a whole lot about...though I do profess some interest and curiosity about the reasons why people choose gender reassignment surgery. Mostly I was interested in exploring the why's and if's about gender and the myriad of choices and ways of being that people encounter and deal with or embrace in their lives. I wasn't sure what to expect...and I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about this book, but I've finished reading it and it's time to write down my thoughts about it. First and foremost, this is a book that doesn't just rehash the same debates one sees nearly everywhere these days about how little Tommy can play with dolls and Sally can play with cars or how Molly can be a doctor and Biff can ... . The Sea Captain and the Lady
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Vada Foster
July 01, 2008
If you love swashbucklers, this story has lots of action and romance. Reading about the Captain fighting for her lady love, reminds me of the old movies I used to love, with a different twist to the gender of the Captain, of course. I loved the characters of Colleen and Abigail and their journey to be together against all odds.
There are not many like it, and for those of us who love the whole idea, we have slim pickings to choose from and very few have Vada's deft humor and characteristic fun with phrasing, alongside a romping good yarn.

. Finding Home (Romances (Bold Strokes Books))
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Georgia Beers
June 10, 2008
What a delightful Sunday afternoon reading!
I really like Georgia Beers' books, with the exception of Thy Neighbor's Wife, and this one delivered as well.
I think her strength is coming up with realistic scenarios and filling them with believable characters. I enjoy that so much in contrast to far fetched plots and super-human women that sometimes inhabit lesfic. Her writing is solid, dialogs well written with a feeling of authenticity, for lack of a better word, to them.
All of that is true for this book as well. I was a bit 'scared' when I read that a dog had such a bit part in the book, but that as well is really well written.

. Nightwood
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Djuna Barnes
September 26, 2006
Barnes' Magnum opus, "Nightwood" (1936), was her second novel and one of those books that probably 'must' be read, the same as "Winesburg, Ohio" (Sherwood Anderson), or "The Great Gatsby", (F. Scott Fitzgerald). Poet Donald J. Greiner once wrote, "[It]...stands out among post-World War I American novels as one of the first notable experiments with a type of comedy that makes the reader want to lean forward and laugh with terror."
What is the book "about"? To grossly oversimplify this complex tale, it's about one woman's mental, emotional, and sexual domination and manipulation, over time, of another young woman. There is also a significant sub-plot about a physician who has his own unique problems, especially concerning alcohol abuse and homosexuality.
This is truly a dark ... Read More:

City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: J.P. Mercer
June 29, 2008
"Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practise to deceive!" Sir Walter Scott
Beautiful women, a triple homicide, suspense, intrigue and enough plot twists to make a pretzel. J.P. Mercer must have a new novel.
Ingrid Sheppard is the first woman president of the United States and she's running for a second term. That alone would be enough to rally certain forces against her, but the fact that she's also a lesbian has the conservative right in an uproar. How far would they go to keep her from winning? When Ingrid's younger sister Sasha is found in a house with three women who have been brutally slaughtered and she's covered in blood, she seems to be the logical suspect and also the end of Ingrid's chances for re-election. All may not be as it seems though. With this ... Read More:
