. The Laramie Project
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Moises Kaufman
September 11, 2001
Matthew Shepard was about two months short of his twenty-second birth when he was robbed, beaten, tied to a fence post and left to die in a rural area of Wyoming. The man who found him at first thought he was a scarecrow. Rushed to Poudre Valley Hospital at Fort Collins, he died on 12 October 1998--and when Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney were arrested for the crime they resorted to a defense known as "gay panic." Matthew Shepherd had propositioned them, they said, and they were so horrified that they killed him in response.
The gay community and numerous civil rights watchdog groups were outraged by the defense, and as more and more facts came to light it seemed that the crime was somewhat more complicated than Henderson ... Read More:

. Cooper's Deale
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: KI Thompson
September 16, 2008
The front cover of Cooper's Deale says that it is a "Romantic Comedy," so the reader might expect light entertaining fare. While there are some scenes that are reminiscent of the Keystone Cops or the Three Stooges, the greatest part of the book isn't very humorous or funny. That doesn't mean this isn't an interesting story, but that notice on the cover is rather perplexing.
Addy Cooper is called home suddenly by the death of her grandmother in an accident that certainly is unusual. She's hit by a piece of debris from space. Addy doesn't have anything to hold her in California since she's managed to lose her job and her lover in the same day, so she returns to Deale, Maryland, to plan the funeral and care for her brother Tommy, ... . The Back Passage
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: James Lear
May 05, 2006
Indeed, this sexually explicit novel is not meant for everyone. As other reviewers have pointed out, there are many cases of gratuitous gay sex throughout the book. The detective of the day, Edward "Mitch" Mitchell, is a randy detective surrounded by host of randy constables, household guests and servants. Mitch is a wonderfully witty character with a holster of camp humor and a raging libido. For those readers who might enjoy a homo Hercule Poirot, this will be a fun and fast read (unless, of course, the reader decides to revisit certain passages of the text!). Overall, this is a fun book, but admittedly not everyone's "cup of tea."

. Finding Home (Romances (Bold Strokes Books))
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Georgia Beers
June 10, 2008
This book was sweet, inoffensive, and a pleasant way to spend a couple of evenings. It was a little tough to get into initially, because we jump right into the rather depressed (and ill-advised) actions of Sarah, who struggles with alcohol-induced issues throughout. But the author kept events and decisions moving along at a rapid pace, which was a relief, because some of the set-up was bland and I didn't want to dwell on it.
The best parts of the book (and really all of her books) were where Georgia's strengths at character interactions and emotions were on display. Some authors are really good at set-up, but can't write realistic relationships. This author does not have that problem. She shines once Natalie and Sarah begin interacting, and thankfully ... . As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised as a Girl (P.S.)
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: John Colapinto
August 08, 2006
This is an incredibly poignant and painful book to read--in my case being read to by my husband, sometimes with his voice choking. We both missed the story when it was making the news and neither of us had heard of the book when it first came out. So for us, it read almost as a mystery adventure. I did go online just before we finished the book and learned that David (the subject of the book) tragically took his own life in 2004.
I offer the title of this review "As GOD made him" because this is a more acceptable term for my fellow Christians than "nature" (or Mother Nature) as is used in the actual title of the book. But I'm certainly not challenging the author on this point. Nor do I challenge the author on any of his points---an unusual stance for ... Read More:

. The Boy Next Door
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: G. A. Hauser

This was the most heartwarming and engrossing gay love story I've ever read. I loved the way the characters were described, and the realistic way in which their relationship changed over time. As youngsters they clearly understood the danger they faced if their innocent affection for each other was discovered, this was described so well and so realistically it took me back to my own days as a gay youth.
I recommend this love story with no hesitation. The characters are completely believable as is the story line.
I read the Kindle version and could hardly stop.
