We have both books, the 1000 Places to Go Before You Die and this book. This one is much better, because it focuses much more on experiences rather than shopping and staying at fancy hotels. The other book seems like half advertising. Sure, the experiences might not all be my cup of tea. I won't be doing any extreme sports, and I won't be partying now that I am a mom. However, there is something for everybody, the pictures are compelling and the descriptions are opinionated, evocative and short.

I used to swear by Lonely Planet (LP) Travel Guides, but this one has too many flaws for a solid rating. Yes, the book is nicely compact and practical, with useful information on lodging, local flavor, and getting around - particularly to and from airports and bus stations. I just returned from a month's solo travel in Argentina and LP was helpful, as it doubtless was for many travelers I met holding this guide.

But: Too much information in this guide (printed in 2005) is out-dated, and at this writing prices are often 30-40% higher than stated. Also, the guide misses many hostals and other lodgings. For example, LP lists just three places to stay in LaFalda (p. 276) and in Villa del Belgrano (p. 280), but these charming towns ... Read More:

I bought this book and find it absolutely useless. If you expect to learn something about a country this is not the book for you. It is a big waste of money. A huge heavy book that will gather dust on your coffee table. Very little information about the countries. I found it absolutely uselss and rather typical of the out-of-date information that Lonely Planet turns out today. If you are a traveler and want to learn something about the countries of the world, find another book. Very sorry that I bought it.

We brought two guides with us to Costa Rica -- this one and Explore Costa Rica (Fifth Edition) by Harry S. Pariser. We found this to be a useful guide. It had plenty of information on basics. However, it lacked the detail found in Explore Costa Rica which has many places and much information not found in other guidebooks we looked at. We really enjoyed the author's sense of humor, as well as the extensive background information provided. For example, we learned a great deal about the rainforest and other ecosystems, history, culture, and economy. We also were able to find some great local restaurants as well as several ecolodges that we did not find elsewhere. Purchased the guide as a replacement for a borrowed guide that got wet while we were in Paris. This one came with a wear/water resistant cover and was very nicely arranged for quickly finding the locations and areas of interest.

Steinbeck's Travels with Charley was his last book I believe. This is a memoir of John Steinbeck's drive from Long Island, New York to the tip of Maine to California and back to Long Island. Of course it's well written, as you'd expect from any Nobel Prize winner in Literature, but it also captures that turbulent time in the early 1960s when Martin Luther King Jr. was trying to achieve Civil Rights and Khrushchev was banging his shoe in the United Nations.

I took this course not knowing what I was getting into. I needed one more class to certify my financial aid. I had been wondering about globalization and other issues affecting the new world economy. If you want to know what the future holds for you and how you can make your millions, this is a great read. I don't know why the other reviewer is complaining about the difficulty. I am certain that you are being taught what you need to know. Read a bit slower, think some more, and have some discussions with your classmates and your professor.
