Lonely Planet provides a summary of important information for travelers to Arab countries. It is set up similarly to other Lonely Planet travel guides that includes getting started, possible itineraries for different length trips, history, culture, food, environment and information on expats who are a large part of the population in the area.

I'm planning a trip to Tanzania, and though this book has some useful information, much of it is out of date. A couple of the websites recommended for safaris are obsolete. That, along with the fact that they mention how to take care of film for your camera (in the 2007 edition of this book), makes me question the freshness of any of the information. Things I would have like more information on:
- Tips on how to get a good airfare from the USA
- Voltages used (so I know what type of plug to bring for my digital camera)
- More detailed information on how to book safaris and/or mountain treks.

In preparing for a trip to Eastern Europe I picked up this book out of curiosity, although I was not planning to visit either of these two countries. Now I am! Rick Steves' enthusiasm for historical and natural sights, as well as for the people here, has opened a whole new world of interest for me. I only hope the countries are as fascinating as the book.

As in all of his books, Steves states his approach to travel clearly: he doesn't cover everything in both countries, just the "best" places, the best according to him, of course. This guide is small enough to fit in a purse or pocket and full of lots of helpful information. I especially liked the foods section. It was easy to discretely pull it out while we were at the tapas bars and restaurants and figure out what was on the menu. My husband who knew no Spanish before our trip, used the helpful phrases verbatim, whereas I found the short dictionary in the back useful when a I couldn't remember certain words - they were almost always in there. There is even a Catalan and Basque phrase section. Highly recommended if you don't speak fluent Spanish.

If you are on a few days city trip this is a very good little book to carry a long. Handy, easy to find tips for your trips and fast to read. Comes with a separate map!

For exploring Northern California we depend on three books for guiding us around: Fodor's, because it includes the Napa and Sonoma wine country; Golden Gate Trailblazer for dayhiking the northern coastal areas around San Francisco and Alpine Sierra Trailblazer for the Yosemite-Lake Tahoe trails.

I bought this exact lonely planet guide for a friend a year ago and now I need it myself, it's great! It's very practical, it allows you to be prepared, it's easy to read and it makes travel so much easier. (I'm hooked; each time I travel I get the lonely planet guide for where I'm travelling to first).

The lonely planet was adequate, but not great. It overemphasizes certain sites at the expense of others and conjures a narrow view of the city in question. It is hard to find specific examples, only that I found I used the guide less and less in favor of simply exploring on my own.

I have lots of guidebooks - and lots of Lonely Planets, for that matter. But despite the fact that they say they are for "independent travellers", I keep finding ridiculous reviews on restaurants and hotels, to the point where I've stopped using them.

The History, Snapshot, and similar sections are great, but if you have a brain of your own - use it. Forget their restaurant and hotel recommendations, as I'm not even sure they visit the places. Sometimes they have history or comments on places that is worthwhile to read, though. All tourbooks may have these drawbacks, to be fair.
