It was my first time in China and I went to both cities. The book was very informative, complete, well illustrated, and easy to read. Everybody in my group kept asking me to read it. I got to see other people's books and they did not come close. I strongly recommend this book.

This is, as made clear by every review, a beautiful book. But on our trip to Italy, we found ourselves using Rick Steves WAY MORE. This book has great pictures and maps, and is good for planning, but it lacks the information Rick Steves gives such as where to park. We would have been completely lost without the Rick Steves book. I will give it this though: We found our hotel from this book and it turned out to be a very nice hotel. Also, this boo weighs a ton so carrying it around was kind of a pain. Get it a a keepsake, but not as a tool for while you are on your trip. Or use it only for the planning stages. If you are looking to get one guidebook, I would get Rick Steves, but I will probably buy both this one and a Rick Steves next time I go to Europe. ... Read More:

I just got this last night and let me say, I cant put it down. It has so much info. If you like wine tasting , try these areas,,or hiking,try this region. It has lots of tips and is well written and going to be a great help when I make it to Italy. If you are looking for a good book to help narrow down areas you want to see like I was,this is the book for you.

My husband and I went to New York for Labor Day Weekend and took this book with us everywhere we went. It had helpful information about restaurants and handy subway maps.

Its only problem is its size. It's a little big. You couldn't put it in your pocket, but it fits all right into a large-ish purse.

This book is all good so far. Looking at different types of itineries across the whole of SE Asia is very helpful, and the prices seem pretty up to date at the mo (aug 08). Have had some good tips on getting the best for our money and the 'our picks' in each section have made the places full of like minded people! Top tip for such a thick book -when you get into a city/town/place cut out the pages with a penknife so you only have to take the relevant info & maps out and about with you. If you are travelling for a long while, the book (with remaining places you havent been to) can be passed on or thrown away.

Although the 10th Edition provides useful information, I found its coverage of Western China extremely dated. Indeed, the information was so stale that a resident expat in Kashgar questioned whether LP visited Xinjinag prior to releasing the new edition.

I bought this for a 70 yr old friend who had suddenly taken an enormous interest in Costa Rica, and who was seriously thinking she wanted to go there. So I surprised her with this as a gift. I have to admit that I had an ulterior motive: at her age and level of physical abilities, I believed she would not be able to participate in all the loveliness and would likely find such a trip too much for her to enjoy. But I did not want to deliver that disheartening message.

She read thru the book and thoroughly enjoyed it but realized on her own that other places and trips would be better for her to consider. Sad but true, so the book did it's job. The pictures and historical information are what made me decide to take this with me on my trip. I still like Lonely Planet, though, because they help you form a better plan for how you'll get around and the best route to take.

Good book, well laid out, just overwhelming in the amount of information. I should have keyed into that fact when I saw just how many books there are on the market. This is turning into a full blown research project.

I have yet to put the phrases to use but I feel more confident already...the phonetic pronunciation guides are very clear. The humor and variety make the book easy to read and become familiar with. Thanks also for the hints on manners and realistic expectations.
