I am writing this review after visiting Peru, and using this book as a guide.

The book is very thick, but actually contains very little useful information. Most pages are simply full with senselessly long lists of restaurants, hotels, and other contact information. Such things are better found on the internet, or by simply walking around the city. Moreover, a lot of that information was already out of date a little more than 1 year after publication. So, about two thirds of the book is immediately utterly useless weight.

Instead, a good guide book,
1) would have a lot of pictures. There are none in this book!

The big call for the new version is that it is now available in English -- Kind Of! Most of the content of the reviews of restaurants and hotels is about their menu items -- which are listed in their original French. Still, even a little bit of English proves indispensible to help us Anglophiles figure out what hotel to stay at and what restaurant to eat at, even though I'm still not sure what deep fried part of the pig I ate one night! We just got back from France a couple of months ago. I have to say, this book gave us the best 4 days outside of Paris during our entire trip.

Although I went in reverse order, I took his advice and went to the Loire Valley, then to Mont St. Michel, and then to Normandy. Rick Steve's map for the driving distance was right on target, so that helped us budget our driving time properly.

Another great investment if you plan on going overseas. Our collection of Rick Steve's is getting pretty big. We also bought his book on Paris, which we used enough that i felt it was worth it, but there is certainly a lot of overlap.

I love their best lists - the best small towns, the best beaches, the best luxury hotels... It's a really great idea. The worst thing is that they don't even mention Murcia and the Costa Cálida at all! Come on guys, 704 pages and you still manage to miss a whole region out of the guide. They say they update it every year so let's see what the 2008 update brings!

Trying to review this book is somewhat hard, technically it's a travel guide and as that its ok, but its really more than that. Its one of the best birds eye views of the major attractions in China. Kind of a Whats-What of China. Having been to China on several trips I can personally attest to the quality of the selection and information.

They Layout is organized by region, usually two provinces to a Chapter. You get a brief overview of the province, then it moves to 1-2 pages per location (maybe a city or a park) in that province. I like pictures. I understand a place I am visiting when I see it and not just have it described in words. This series of books are idea for those of us who want to know the history and context of what we're seeing. More than a Lonely Planet Guide to the best hostels in the world, this series provides a comprehensive guide to what to see and why.

If you're really going to rent a car in Italy, well, are you REALLY sure you want to rent a car in ITALY?!? Have you heard of the way Italians drive?! Ok, fine, I won't insist in trying to discourage you from having a white-knuckle, hold-on-to-your-seat, head-scratching, stressful vacation, but the least you can do is be equipped with this road Atlas. The suggestions on places to see according to each map are very good.
Oh, and DO NOT FORGET to request a GPS for your car!!! If the rental company say they don't have it, insist upon getting one.

My wife and I are in our 30s, and took our first trip to Alaska to cruise and see the beauty of the coast and its wildlife. In preparation for the trip, we bought 3 books: (1) Frommers Alaska, (2) Lonely Planet - Alaska, and (3) Fodor's Ports of Call. If you are taking a cruise, and are buying less than 3 books (or if you don't want to check a 2 pound book in your luggage) - then you should not buy Frommer's Alaska.

Frommers Alaska is the largest / thickest of the books discussed above, but much of the information is irrelevant to a cruise ship passenger (cities in the deep interior, hotels, suggested 2 week-long itineraries, etc). There is one 20 page chapter, not written by the author, devoted to choosing a cruise-line, which can be helpful. However, better ... Read More:

This is really a beautiful book, with lots of colorful pictures and everythig. It's very concise and small, what is really good and easy to carry.

It does not have as many information as other books, but is one of the best I've ever purchased.

I reccomend.

The lonely planet helped as as always to plan our vacation. We spend only one week in this interesting country, but managed to plan an interesting and packed two day trip. Instead of booking through the hotel and spending at least $250 per person we took all the information out of the book. Besides saving some money, we had a lot of information and explored the country a lot better than with a pre booked trip. As the book is from 2006 some of the prices have already increased. I can highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to plan his trip on his own and/or wants background information on history, culture and people.
