.Las Vegas: The Best of Glitter City : An Impertinent Insider's Guide City Travel Guides > Books > Insiders by: Don W. Martin, Betty Martin, Don Martin, Betty Woo Martin 1997-11 First of all, never trust a guide book to Vegas which states "we don't gamble" (p. 31) and then tries to tell you which casinos are the best. This book is full of opinionated "top ten" lists which only appeal to a certain demographic. (Namely, the demographic which would drive all over town to find the number one 99-cent shrimp cocktail, and then would look for the number one spot to park the RV. Lucky for them, both lists are provided.) Every traveler to Vegas should see Sehlinger's Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas, which would appeal to a wide variety of tourists. .Hawaii: The Best of Paradise: A Haole Insiders' Guide to Honolulu and Beyond (DiscoverGuides) City Travel Guides > Books > Insiders by: Betty Woo Martin, Don W. Martin 2003-03 I thought this book would show an insider's view of the top ten attractions in each category, instead, it shows the top ten "most popular" even though the author, who is a former marine, doesn't agree in the descriptions that these things are worthwhile. The hotel recommendations are the worst part of the book, most of the hotels on the list are chains and the author doesn't seem to have ever stayed in most of them, and the descriptions mention that some of them are overpriced and aren't even clean! This book was a complete waste of money. Also, the author does not provide website addresses for many of the listings, only phone numbers. I had to buy another book in order to find a hotel that was under $400 per night that wasn't a youth hostel ... I ordered this book almost six months ago and I've been told numerous times that it's delayed, over and over again. Needless to say, no book yet! The section on the radio stations, however, needs to be taken like the humor in AMERICAN WEDDING, 13 GOING ON 30, ALONG CAME POLLY, SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE, THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELLING PANTS, DATE MOVIE, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, HARVARD MAN, WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU, GARFIELD: THE MOVIE, DRIVE ME CRAZY, or GARFIELD: A TALE OF TWO KITTIES for several reasons: KKHK is now KQMT, and classic-rocker KRFX belongs under Rock, not Oldies. .Where To Wear 2005: The Insider's Guide to New York Shopping (Where to Wear: New York City Shopping Guide) City Travel Guides > Books > Insiders by: Kara Alaimo, Balint Bognar 2004-11 These books are really helpful in helping you find exactly what you need and want. I've used the Los Angeles and Las Vegas and New York books and I've found stores that I didn't even know existed. The one slight incy problem would be that there wasn't quite enough variety (as far as plus size clothes, obscure stores). They give you phone numbers, store hours etc etc and this is really useful when you might be unfamilliar with a city. .Avant Guide New York City: Insiders' Guide to Progressive Culture (Avant Guide New York City) City Travel Guides > Books > Insiders by: Andre Stenson, Cloe Anderson, Patricia Stewart May 30, 2006 I Just returned from 1 week business/pleasure visit to New York and I found this guide full of good recommendations and descriptions were accurate. Better than Lonely Planet or Time Out's, which I also bought. Quite a useful guide with plentiful restaurant, watering hole and sight-seeing suggestions. It's replete with valuable information about attractions, hotels, eateries, shops, spas, etc. Beyond this, however, the layout is terrific, and the book is remarkably easy to use as a result. The maps, in particular, are helpful.I'd definintely purchase an Avant Guide guidebook again.
