So many travel writers tell you where to go, what to see and at what price. Greenberg takes a new tack - he tells you who is really in charge (within hotels: concierge, bellhop, doorman, etc.), why hotels do what they do (hotel ratings, bolting down remote controls, etc.) and, most importantly, what to avoid. The chapter that considers housekeeping is worth the book alone. This section on hotel sanitation and cleanliness is not for the squeamish.

I travel extensively and found that Greenberg's book is not only an enjoyable read, but a helpful read. I took away tips for travel that I will definitely use in the future. I have had various editions of Paris Inside Out since it was mailed to me as an incoming freshman at The American University of Paris in 1997. David Applefield, a former AUP professor, provides invaluable "insider" information about every possible subject. He tells you where the only post office is in Paris that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He tells you what oddities to look out for when you are on the metro, including a sign that shows EXACTLY where the Bastille was (as opposed to the column at Bastille that is several hundred feet above ground and thus not highly accurate). It was the review of Cole's P.E. Buffet (page 12) that did it. How can you NOT want to dine in a restaurant described as follows: "Once you have gotten used to the stale cigarette effluvium you'll detect a putrid sub-odor; hard to place, but something akin to the scent of the repeatedly pissed-in pants of an elderly man who's recently consumed a large plate of steamed asparagus"? Sadly, I missed the asparagus undertones, as the doggie (I hope!) doo-doo I stepped in on my way into the restaurant masked even the fragrance of my tasty, inexpensive lunch of BBQ lamb shanks. I've now eaten my way through most of the restaurants in LA Bizarro and I've never had a bad meal. Indeed, some of the places Lovett and Maranian mention--Clifton's Cafeteria, for instance ... I bought an older version of this book at a used books bookstore. We are consindering a move to Phoenix and had an upcoming preview trip. This books was amazingly helpful and thorough. It covers history, nature, attractions, events, places to eat, etc. It has a section on kids activities, relocating to the Phoenix area, retiring to the Phoenix area and lots of other useful info. If we decide to move there, I will definitely order the newer version.
